Phillip,

I agree with your post. In addition, it works well when the learning objectives are aligned for courses that are in a sequential format. So once the student has pass the pre-requisite of a particular course, they will be confident in knowing that they will have success in the next level class.

Properly constructed learning objectives allows you (the instructor) to adjust the objectives based upon concrete and defined levels of assessment. When the students know what they are going to learn, they can assess their level of retention and the instructor can adapt the teaching styles used to enhance the learning environment to increase retention - allowing the students a sense of accomplishment in the defined objectives.

I agree with your post. However, how can instructors find ways to assess learning objectives that were not created by them, individually? In many career colleges, the learning objectives are created for the instructor and they have to find ways to create activities and assessments, that adhere to the pre-determined objectives.

Setting vague or undefined learning objectives does not allow clarity of subject matter nor does it allow a measurable means of assessment. Student outcomes or performance on state exams or certifications is a direct factor of the instructor or college teaching towards the standards of its specific industry.
