Hi Joel,
Good professional development idea about observing other instructors. I would suggest that as you are observing them that you jot down some notes of what you are seeing so you can take those ideas back to your classroom/lab. Also, you might want to observe instructors in areas in fields different from yours so you can concentrate on their delivery and not the content. This method allows you to see their instructional styles in a different light.

try this get your studenst that are advanced to help the studnents that are not doing so well.
i find this helps the good student retain what he has leaered and the other student to get the info from a peer and my be able to see it from a different prospective.

I think sitting in other classes and observing instructors helps further develop my instructional style

Hi John,
Knowing student learning preferences or styles can really benefit you when it comes to planning your delivery. This knowledge shows you how to balance and format your lectures, demonstrations and group work. Keep up the good work.

Hi Abundio,
You make a good point about keep notes on what worked and what didn't plus the feedback from your students. This way each time you teach a class you can improve on your ability to instruct.

I try to have group work done where I have some of my more advanced students do extra stuff without making the rest feel inferior

Utilizing and analyzing the learning styles of my students will give me added advantage towards delivering a highly improved learning environment.

Combining the different styles of learning and adopting a delivery system within the class room will further enhance the students' abilities to maximize their learning abilities.

Hi Jose,
Great job of balancing all of the different components of instructional delivery. Each of them has a role to play in the process and it is important to find that balance. Gary

Hi Mili,
The balancing of the two extremes of your student population is the challenge of teachers. What are some of the methods you are going to use to help you in your organization of your lectures as you work with these groups?

I learned to take notes records all the negative and positive comments, used as guide to make my style of instruction effectively.

Difinitely agree to used techniques as models to build your own style.

Watch the techniques of other instructors. Use the techniques as models to build your own style. Monitor yourself and the student's reactions to you during lessons for the purpose of continuous improvement.

This module contained many useful suggestions to enhance my instructional style. Currently, I employ PowerPoint presentations to enhance my lectures, in addition I intend to generate handouts my students can use as resource materials, as well as work to engage them more during the lectures to keep their attention focused by using open discussions and real-life scenarios.

Hello Dr. Meers
I am going to try and be more organized in the delivery of my lectures. The course I teach is a challenge to many of my students because they do not have the pre-requisite knowledge. On the other end of the spectrum I have other students who are eager for a challenge. I have to balance the needs of my extremely diverse classroom

Hi Manju,
You present several good approaches to your instruction. The key thing is to involve the students in the learning process not just talk at them. You have outlined a method to make this happen. Good job.
Gary

Hi George,
I really respect your ability to analyze your learning and instructional styles. Your discussion of how you are approaching your class planning is to be commended. By using this kind of insight you are developing yourself as a professional and being more effective as an instructor. Keep up the good work, it is paying off for you.
Gary

I think it is good to vary instructional styles and techniques because different students have different learning styles. Therefore, it would be optimal to obtain feedback from my students to see how the majority of them best learn. I prefer a combination spatial and analytical teaching style for ultrasound, specifically teaching in terms of pictures and details, then being open for questions.
I could ask the students to be more active in class by encouraging group discussions and asking critical thinking-type questions.

I am naturally a visual learner and I find myself drawing a lot of pictures and looking at pictures on PowerPoint and not seeing the need to explain because it just clicks in my head. I am challenging myself to teach to the opposite learning style, I have found I can be more effective if I draw a picture prior to the start of the lesson and put the marker down. I can then walk around and don’t feel like I need to "guard the whiteboard." I can keep changing states and moving, prowling to keep the students engaged while still move back and explain my drawing. I have by no means mastered this but since I know my downfall I am doing my best to address and correct it to be more affective over a wide range of learning styles.

Paul, I am the same way in conducting my class room. Some students pick up the concepts quickly and some struggle to learn. Therefore, I teach in all learning styles and move around the class energetically to bring the enthusiasm level up in the learning process. When the energy level in the classroom is high with questions, input and enthusiasm, minds are more open to receive information.

Hi Paul,
Your efforts to adapt to the student population that you have is the key to keeping them engaged in the learning process. By responsive to them as you are your students can see that you care about their success.
