Hi Ruth,
Good ideas all. Each of these expanded ideas will help you to reach your students in different ways and will help to keep them engaged and focused.
Gary
I can observe other instructors to get new, fresh ideas and bring in guest speakers. I believe that we need to incorporate many styles to reach as many students as possible. What may work for one student will not necessarily work for others.
That is very good of you. This is because you have established rapport with them.
That is true, however, knowledge of the subject is the key to having students pay attention to the subject. When students find out that the Istructor knows what she/he is talking about, they will develop interest inthe subject. Interest motivates them so they can learn.
I want to firn out if the students have the basic knowledge of the information that I am presenting, the find out if they undeerstand the information. I they have the basic knowledgea and understand what I am talking about, then I have to look into myself and modify my presentation method. This way, I will creat interest in Students, thus motivating them to learn.
My Instructional style is a mixture style. To further develop, refine and enhance my instructional style I can include case studies, group group presentations, brain storming sessions, and hands-on activities.
Hi Edward,
Feedback is essential for student success. They need to know where they are in the course and the level of their success. By keeping them informed you will have more engagement from the students.
Gary
Hi Steven,
Listening to students is a key part of reflective teaching. This way as you mention you can make changes as they are needed to keep the students moving forward in the course.
Gary
Hi Steven,
Great way to keep current and continue to develop. This will help you to stay at the top of your game as an educator.
Gary
Hi James,
I think that is a great style since it is student centered which is what teaching is about.
Gary
Hi James,
Good point. I just have a mental image of students trying to put me out and that I am running around the classroom soaking wet yelling at the top of my lungs. Or that I will stop, drop and roll in front of the class and then they will wonder what is wrong with me. Sorry I just got off course there for a minute with the imaging thing. I know exactly what you mean and we need to keep in our minds the idea of the urgency of what we are doing as instructors.
Gary
Hi Daniel,
You are right about using such a method for learner feedback. The point about learning more that thought is a good one. They are surprised that they know and can do as much as they can.
Gary
Asking questions about the lesson often and then providing "supportive" feedback seems to keep both the disconnected and avid student more involved. It is important to demonstrate a caring attitude when giving feedback
Hi Andrea,
Just keep working at it. You will find that you get very good at commanding their attention through your conduct of the class. By using different types of activities you will be able to get them to focus on you and the course content. This is what learning engagement is all about.
Gary
Hi Jeffrey,
All your efforts as you have outlined them here will serve to refine your style and not change it. This is a good thing because you will get better at understanding your style and how it works with the students you are teaching. Each time you teach a course you will get better at it plus more comfortable with your teaching persona.
Gary.
Listen to the students, they will let you know if your too fast too slow, to technical, need to deliver information in a diffrent way. I have found that within each class there tends to be a diverse learning curve. It is my job to find what works for the entire class and bring them to the level in which all students learn the object lession for that day, week, or session.
Reading weekly motivational article sent from D.O.E. I also subscribe to many periodicals to keep very aware of what is going on in our industry. This helps me advise students and give them ideas as to how to procede with thier career path, and sucessfully graduating our program. Talk to other proffesionals in other disciplines to gather thier advice and customize it to my particular style
Hi Robert,
I wish you the best in this teaching effort. Once you get through the course a few times you will start to see where you can add activities that will support student learning. It is at this time more "aha" moments start to occur and you will get more satisfaction from all the effort you are putting forth in preparation.
Gary
Hi Brenna,
Try it again and this time not only tell them it will be on the quiz but give them an example of how they can use the information in their lives. Create a connection between class and their memories. You should see different results since they will be storing the information in their working memory instead of just the cognitive memory.
Gary
Hi Brenna,
You are right on with your professional development through your method of trying something new each course phase. This lets you be creative and excited about each class each time, plus you find all kinds of new ways of presenting the material.
Gary
