This is also true for the kitchen classes as long as you let the students know on the first day. It is a little harder to controll in kitchen due to the atmosphere. Showing the students in private that they have made this misstake once usually works.

Profanity is addressed under the subject of professionalism on day one in every class taught. It is established that the class is a "swear free zone" for both students and the instructor. This policy has worked exceedly well in the management class taught at a culinary school.

Technology is a great learning tool. I strive each day to find a way to incorporate it into our classrooms. Sometimes that is difficult to do in a culinary kitchen.

I use collaborative exercizes all the time in my classes. Teamwork is our business. This also gives students a chance to work together with their own organization and ideas.

I have found recently that the use of Jing is a great instructional tool. I plan to increase my use of Jing to enhance my instructional style. I can use Jing to tape my voice and movement on my computer and then publish the recording into a webpage. This is a helpful resource to enhance students understanding of course expectations.

I try to use interactive learning and use different teaching tools. I keep track of successful activities and apply them in future classes.

Even though I have been at this for many years I do not think I know it all. My thist to learn more is never satisfied. The more I know the more I pass on to my classes. This is very gratifying to me and the students are always appriciative. When they are like that it is a good feeling to me and them. When they appriciate, they learn.

Helping the student react positivly is key. Especially when they are very upset that they made a misstake. This assures them that they are progressing or what they need to do to get it right. This is part of the teaching process.

I agree that when someone comes up and tells you that you made a difference in their life and education that can take away all the bad moments you have experienced

When I think of developing my instructional style, I keep coming back to the concept of continually learning. I believe you can never know your subject matter enough. To thoroughly know the content I am teaching allows me the opportunity to engage the student in learning from several different angles. If I truly know the subject matter, I can listen to questions, and provide feedback in a different way that could enhance the students' learning. I can learn the subject matter as both the student and the instructor, helping to greatly enhance the instruction, and hopefully the learning.

Always letting the student know that - it's not always making the mistake, but reacting to; and adjusting to create a positive outcome - is part of the learning and application process.

I have found that my instructional style is constantly changing and evolving for each class I teach. With such a diverse student body (adult, late teens, focused/not focused) sometimes together in the same class, I might have to try multiple techniques that each group may or may not respond to.

Also, I have found that by observing fellow instructors opening and/or closing their classes I am able to rekindle or refine an approach to reaching a class that may be a challenge.

Time management. Spirit in teaching the subject, humor to keep interest, life experiences to make subject interesting, relavent.

I agree. You wewre one of my instructors many years ago. You always had a possitive to follow a negative. My though process was when I made a misstake I was very hard on myself. You always showed me my progress even when I made misstakes. You always gave me my positives.

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Assess the students' in their learning preferences. This way it will iilustrate the primary learning styles the class need . As an instructor, I can then prepare my lesson in those formats to the advantage of the students. If done in the begginig of the class, it will save time and effort trying to figure out the best way to present material.

I agree motivation is key.......We must never loose sight of that. Some times it is more difficult than others but I believe we must try our best to leave each and every day on a positive note

For me to be a better motivator.
Helping the student see the progress they are making toward their career vs. just correcting them on methods and procedures.
Encouraging and rewarding them with positive referforcement.

I as a teacher and former student have high expectations and hold my students to a higher standard.

I need to employ a more interactive method of teaching/learning. My next class, for example, is part lecture and part lab work. To make the lecture part more interesting and more relevant to the students, I will have them take turns doing the teaching by assigning them topics to research and report back to the class. The competencies to be achieved during the lab portion of the class becomes more significant to the students then because they can tie in the report made by their peer to the work to be done.

I am a brand new instructor and so I have yet to really have my own instructional style...as I will be teaching for the 2nd time next month. One of the key things that I remember from previous teachers who have inspired me is that they were really excited/passionate about the subject matter at hand. The passion and excitement was contagious and so I would like to be the same. I think this would be one of my first priorities as a "technique" to employ.
