Always being early to class and organized.
Kaley,
Good point and one we need to remember each time we step into the classroom or lab. We are role models for our students and our actions need to reflect such.

One of the best ways to model what you want or expect your students to become is not only to be the model but to have them practice being the model themselves. Choosing a class leader who has experience in the class and knows the basic rules can also be a model for the newer students.
Just as parents set the example by which they want their child to follow, we too want to be the best role model for each of our students. We want to be who they remember and what qualities we displayed at all times. We want to be forever with them as they go through their career
I believe that is very true James. We represent what they can become.
I think that being a role model for the student is very important. It can as simple as being professional, showing passion for the field, or just wearing the correct attire. If I cannot enjoy the field that I am teaching about and I cannot follow the guidelines my field requires, how can I instruct my students to do so. I have always believed that a passion for the field and career choices you have made mean a lot. This goes double for the instructors. They need to see that the field has so many options and there are people including their instructor who love what they do.
Instructors should set an example for the students, of how professional they should be. Dealing with difficult situations in a more positive way would help influence the students to behave in an equally positive manner.
The big rule to follow in my classroom is showing respect for each other. My rule for myself is to model that respect in and out of the classroom. The respect rule for me encompasses many things such as starting class on time; providing prompt feedback on student assignments, projects and tests; talking to students and not talking down to them; displaying confidence in my students; showing them I care and am committed to teaching along with being honest and truthful with them. If I take the leadership role and model these positive behaviors, students can choose to develop the same skills by showing up on time, handing in assignments on time, displaying confidence by dressing and speaking appropriately and by being respectful and honest with their peers. It is a win-win for everyone when an instructor models positive behavior in the classroom.
Jesse,
This is the way to establish a professional setting for your students and serve as a role model for them as they prepare to enter their career field. This is an important part of their educational development.

Being in the classroom on time and dressing professionaly is an important part of being a role model which will help them when they go out in the field. Also being prepared for class is also very important.
Starting out by always being to class on time and ready to teach will show the students that being punctual is very important in that career. Also, refraining from using foul language and practicing patience will get them in the habit of doing the same.Dressing professionally in clean clothes everyday will provide a good example as well.
Jessica,
I like your approach to the classroom and your subject area. English is often not seen as being essential to career success as you know. Yet, it is critical if students are going to be seen as professionals. They need to be good communicators no matter their career choice.

Diana,
Good list of components of what makes up professional conduct and behavior in the field. Keep reinforcing and modeling such to your students.

Rosemary,
This is such an important part of being an instructor. We need to keep this in mind each time we step into the classroom.

An instructor’s behavior both inside and outside the classroom is important as your student well model that behavior. Your professionalism is not taught but copied from your example.
As an English instructor I impart knowledge that will be applied in every career field. Therefore I find it vitally important to always model professional behavior, especially as it applies to speech and written communication. That being said, I also think it is essential to show students that being grammatically correct does not automatically equate to being stuffy or snooty. A good sense of humor goes a long way in improving students' receptiveness to new information. I feel that modeling this behavior will show students that carrying a positive attitude and pleasant disposition into their professional communications will help to open doors for them much more easily.
As teachers we are role models and our behavior is what the students see. Behavior, language, tone, motivation, personality and appearance are but a few things we as role models must present in a professional manner
Being a role model is of the utmost importance. You must look and act professionally. You must know your material. you must talk intelligently about your material.
Yolanda,
You make an excellent point and one that is often forgotten by both administrators and students. We are pulled in many different ways and expected to have the answers to each question each time we meet the class. Teaching is a great profession but it does take effort to become proficient at it.
