Since approximately 70% of what we learn is accomplished through sight, I like to use carefully selected charts and pictures to enhance the learning environment.

the learning environment plays a huge roll in the instructional process. The enviroment sets the mood for each student. So, you want to allow the students to be problem solvers and think outside the box. That will allow the students to apply their knowledge in more than one way.

Hi Rachelle,
Students need to see how the dots connect to each other in relation to how the class content will prepare them for the future. You are doing that through the real world applications in your labs.
Gary

I teach mailnly in lab classes, I have found that the more realistic the enviornment the more interested the students are in learning. They ask for more hands on opportunities and are more likely to volunteer for community events that allow them to put their new found skills to use.

Setting the pace for learning is the top priority from day one. Introduce yourself, have each student talk about their background and goals. Staying focused on the course material, never read lectures from a book. (You will lose the student from the start). Keep your class interesting, encourage class participation and think outside the box.

Hi Charisma,
So true and yet many instructors don't prepare their classrooms or labs for the students. So they waste time running around during class trying to find supplies and equipment. This raises the frustration level of everyone.
Gary

Hi Andrea,
I agree with the realistic training aspect. This really helps the students to see the ROI they are receiving from their education.
Gary

the setting has everything to do with the classroom. Just as important as the setting in reading a book.

The learning environment must be conducive to learning. For instance, laboratories should always be filled with the appropriate lab ware to allow students the ability to function appropriately. Classrooms as well should include visual aids, auditory aids and perhaps small yet applicable hands on aids to accomodate all learning styles. Even something as simple as the temperature in the classroom can impact learning for students. Students should be comfortable yet be alert and attentive as well.

Realistic training is a must in the learning process with my students because when they leave the classroom setting they are going directly to the work enviroment where they are excepted to function with minumum mistakes. I often simulate the working enviroment my reviewing case studies, written reports and patient/employee interactions. I also role play the interview process.

its very important to help students engage better in class

Real-life examples is important for students. The text book can only get them so far.

The learning environment provides a safe and comfortable setting for students to learn and expand their knowledge in their desired field. As a instructor I enjoy organizing and making the environment fun and interesting.

The enviroment is very important because if the students feels uncomfortable their learning ability will be affected.

I feel it plays an important part in the overall success in a students education and career path. I bring work place activities and duties as part of my classes content as often as possible.

I feel the learning environment should be conducive to learning. This includes: the temperature of the room, seating, and equipment. My biggest problem is the temperature of the room. Hot-students fall asleep, Cold-they are trying to keep warm.

I use personal work experience, improve the learning process.

When students are in a clean, comfortable, well organized, and properly prepared learning environment, it is easier for them to focus on course content. It is the instructor's job to make sure not only that the student's basic needs are met (a comfortable chair, not too hot or cold, adequate bathroom breaks, etc.) but also that it is a space where they can concentrate and aren't overwhelmed by clutter, noise, or other distractions.

The learning evironment plays a vital role in the instructional process. Students must be comfortable and focused on class with minimal distractions. If the room is too dark, cold or noisy the students will be more focused on the external environment that the content of the course.

I agree, it is important to teach students to be thinkers, problem solvers, researchers, so they can be life long learners. It is also important to encourage and stimulate their interest so that learning does become fun.
