Environment should be learner friendly. If noisse, lighting, temperature, or even crowded conditions do not allow for any learning, all the effort and preparation cannot make up for that.
The learning enviornment plays a huge role. Most adult students have many distractions at home so the classroom has to be a place they can come to and learn. The classroom also has to be the place they feel comfortable and surrounded by teachers and peers there to help them succeed.
The more real the situations are in the classroom, the more comfortable the students will be once they start their career. By not having them know as well as understand the significance of how things will be once they enter into the working world is presenting a false perception. I feel it is imperative that we as instructors prepare our students for real life, while in class.
Hi Angela,
Good put about how to handle disruptions and use them as teaching tools. They will happen so we need to move beyond them and keep our student focused. Thanks for sharing with us.
Gary
Hi Treshena,
Good points. As educators we need to make sure we plan for all components of the teaching process not just the content.
Gary
Hi Glenn,
This part of their education is very important. If they can't handle pressure or meet deadlines no matter how skillful they are they aren't going to enjoy the success they want to have. This helps them get ready for the real world just as you mentioned.
Gary
Hi Joyce,
You make a key point about the need for skills beyond just those that would be considered technical. The social mediator/cooperator skills needs to be developed as well if the students are going to be successful in their careers.
Gary
If the learning enviroment is full of distractions then no one is happy, and therfore can not learn or teach effectively. The more distractions the less concentration. If there are some disrubtive students it takes time away from teaching and the students are no longer paying attention to the subject, instead they are into the disruptive behavior. Even when the disrubtion is removed, it is hard to get the students back to the subject because they want to talk about what happened, or at least are thinking about it. The teacher then has to get their minds back to the subject being taught. Even this doesn't happen often, I try to use it as a teaching point. I am always trying to get the soft-skills into class and usually we can all learn from a disruption, just do not dwell on it.
Hi everyone, I listened to the Chats in Breeze and some other modules bout the live chat and realized that my background noise, swallowing, and even regular braething can be heard from the instructors. Wow i would have never thought of that....lol. Im so glad I learned about this in PRE-session
When I think about how to incorporate this into my pro-forma I try increasing and decreasing environmental pressure. I am a culinary instructor I want them to feel the stress of their chosen occupation and be able to manage it. In Lab I artifically find ways to bring levels of environmental press but make sure they leave with a sense they have the tools to be succeessful when they have finish they're educational journey.
In an instructional process, the learning enviroment is essenital with adult learners. Having proper seating, table space, working equipment, proper lightings and materials are primary factor that enhances the ability to understand the content of the lessons.
The learning environment is critical. Working with nursing studnets in a hospital can be a challening. Not only do you have to be able to demonstrate any procedures but you also have to be able to be a mediator between the staff and students.
Hi Treshena,
Right you are. My first room was that way and I thought I would not survive the course. I knew for sure some of my students would die due to the heat but they didn't. To this day when I see one of these students we laugh about that room. It has given us a common connecting point all these years.
Gary
It plays a major role. We have all been stuck somewhere that was too hot or cold, while someone we are not familiar with/to that expected our attention. Which was diverted totally by the monotone voice and physical uncomfortableness:)
The learning environment is important for the student. Instructors must create a positive learning environment for their students.
To create a positive learning environment, instructors can be prepared, organized, and make sure that understand the subject matter.
I agree. Encouraging students to make comments, share experiences and participate in class discussion makes the learning environment much more meaningful and interesting. Checking equipment and supplies well in advance assuring that everything is in good working order and that supplies are adequate to meet the needs of all students in the lab is crucial.
A comfortable learning environment allows students to concentrate and learn the course material. Students should not be wasting time worrying when they should be listening, learning, and given time to think for themselves.
The learning environment is a reflection of not only the instructor, but also the college, therefore it has to be inviting and equiped with all of the necessary learning resources.
Hi Linda,
This is so important for so many students we have today. The more structure we can bring into their lives the more they are likely to use that structure when they are out in the work world which will result in greater career success.
Gary
My students tend to have very litle structure in their lives, so it is important that the learning environment be structured, so that they learn what is expected of them in school and so that they can transfer these skills to their profession once they graduate. By this I mean personal professionalism, being on time and doing work in a timely manner, listening carefully to instructions and then following them, asking questions if something is not understood, taking personal responsilbity and pride in doing their work, etc.
