Joseph,
Your last sentence really sets up the learning environment. Students need to see value and application to what is being taught and they need to be able to learn in a setting that is comfortable for them and relates to their chosen field of study.

The learning environment can play a fundamental role in facilitating the learning process of the students. As the material pointed out, the focal point of the classroom is to create a place for student learning, not teaching. Ways to enhance this effect can include maintaining the proper classroom resources, ensuring enough space for comfort, and minimizing distractions.
To mantain students focused in the progress of the lecture or technical skill to be learned, it is esential to be in a positive environment, from the point o view of facilities, accesibility to all resources and a two way communication between instructor and students.
A very intergal one, the student neeeds to feel comfortable in his or her surroundings. This is especially significant during lecture because a more comfortable environment will reflect better conversation during lecture topics. I feel students will retain knowledge at a higher level once they become involved and buy in to what the discussion is about

I like your use of analogies and I am sure your students do as well. They help to reinforce the point in a more understandable way so keep on using them. In terms of effective teaching your point is a good one and one we need to remember as we do our instructional planning.

It plays a very important role. I believe educating people is only as good as the weakest link, much like my old stereo. If you had a great record player, a fabulous tuner, and crummy speakers the music sounded terrible. Likewise, if you have a great curriculum, fantastic teacher, and a poor environment, you will not get great results. While teaching, I try to fix the most deficient variable, then improve on the next. Yes, I use a lot of analogies.
Terry,

I have had in the past times where I felt I was in a bad movie, you know the one "Sister Act" where Whoopie is trying to gain control of her catholic high schoolers. Well that gave me inspiration, I now on the first day, we all sit and get to know each other. My class will need to work as a team so if they know a little about that person they can get to the working part soon. I use "Ice Breaker" questions and/or have previous students let them know what to expect. They get to size each other before they speak to each other, this has helped tremendously.
Tawana,
