For myself; I remember coming into a classroom very nervious and scared. It always help to greet your students as they walk in the door; this way they feel relieved and I too feel relieved and a little less stressed.
thats awesome...mostly because online is one word...maybe you should stop being critical and be work on being professional and use this forum to enhance other instructors not tear them down...I'm sure your students enjoy being picked apart instead of built up.
If the INSTRUCTOR does not know how to spell INSTRUCTOR, then the student will have a bad first impression!
When I read a comment that is riddled with misspelled words, improper grammar and punctuation that is just plain wrong, MY OWN first impression of the writer is quite terrible too. Everybody needs to practice good impression techniques ON LINE also! Stop the sloppy replies...
One of the most important elements in a classroom is the feeling of security Students need to feel secure so that their affective filter lowers and they are able to implement their cognitive ability. Thus, making a positive first impression is the first step in lowering the affective filter. A teacher must impress on the students that he she is an organized, effective leader capable of teaching the students. Without this established, the student will be left feeling unsecure and, hence, unable to learn. It is that important.
An instructors first impression helps to set the tone for the class, in terms of both professionalism and teaching style. If the students don't respect the intructor the learning experience will not be as positive.
Well, the first day sort of dictates the remainder of the course. I love the first day of class becuase the expecations have yet to be set. It seems like the only time during the quarter where I actually get to try new things without reproach. I get instant feedback especially if the students do not know me yet.
A good first impression is everything in gaining rapport from your students, people are very biased in general and if you don't gain their trust/respect, you will not be as effective.
The first impression that the instructor leaves on the class will inform interactions for the rest of term. Students respect an instructor that leads by example, is passionate, engaged and knowledgeable: all of these qualities must be expressed during the first class.
A negative first impression sets the tone for the rest of the quarter/semester which can decrease learning
First impressions are powerful and there is no "make-up" if the impression is negative. Your attitude, enthusiasm, approachability set the tone for success.
Both planning and the ability to improvise are equally important.
It helps reduce student anxieties and stress. You model the professionalism required and expected in your profession, and it lets the students get to know you better.
Hi Yvonne,
Well said. A positive first impression sets the tone for the entire class. The more you can do to set that tone the easier it is going to be to keep the class forward focused.
Gary
You never have a second chance to make first impression
Making a positive first impression is important because the student will make decisions regarding the information that will be taught by the instructor based on these impression. If an instuctor presents themself in a professional manner, the student receives the message that the instructor is serious about wanting to teach. If the first impression is of an instructor who is disorganized, not very presentable and unprepared the students get the impression that this instructor is not serious about wanting to teach.
To make the students feel comfortable with the criteria of the course and show the professional attitude that you will show and expect out of them. Also to bring across your knowledge of the subject and personal experience to show the relevence of the course.
Hi Joelle,
You are right about needing to establish a positive and supportive tone for the class from the very beginning. What are some strategies that you use to help make this happen with your classes.
Thanks.
Gary
The first day of class is a very important time for faculty to establish a tone for what will happen the rest of the term. It is appropriate that a teacher reflect on just what climate and first impression she/he would like to establish.
Hi Linsey,
You have a very clear understanding of what it is you are to do as an educator. With this understanding you can plan your instructional delivery and teaching style. As a result I know you are effective in your instruction as you prepare your students for success in their chosen careers.
