The students can tell quickly if an instructor has prepared or is "winging" it....Time managament is essential. For every class, a well planned and developed lesson will keep things progressing and on track with the objectives of that particular class. It also sets a great example for the students when the faculty have their act together and represents well
To make a good first impression. instructor should help students by explaining to them the goals and objectives and giving them suggestions for succesfully accomplishing the requirements
By making a positive first impression, you are setting the stage for the class. It shows that you are prepared as an instructor and lets the students know what they can expect from you. I always start with an ice-breaker, e.g. ask about their hobbies, one thing that makes them unique, the name of their favorite movie, etc.
Hi All,
Thank you everyone for the great comments about how to create a positive first impression in your classes. As you all have said with planning and effort you can establish yourself as the class leader and manager. Once that is done you can build on the development of the students and their learning opportunities.

A positive first impression sets the tone for how you interact with your students, sets a tone of mutual respect and allows everyone to get more comfortable and understand that we need to interact and collaborate to get the most of the class. It the start of a journey together...and need to start on the right foot, otherwise you'll never gain good footing and will stumble along the way.
When you are able to set the tone of the class through, preparation and planning you can create an environment of understanding and learning. It is so important that first day to make a good impression so that your class and your future classes will continue to improve during the semester and years to come for everyone including the instructor. That way everyone has a wonderful experience.
A positive first impression helps to set the tone for the whole class. By having a good impression it helps the students to understand who you are as an instructor as well as what you expect of them as students. It also helps the students to adjust and prepare them for the course and to feel comfortable with you and the material.
Coming in as a new instructor you are an unknown to all the students. They do not know how you operate, they do not know your background, nor do they know your expectations. This is your world not theirs. You need to make the best impression as possible so that they can be as open to you and your teaching style as possible.
If students positively perceive you and respect you, they are more likely to work with you in the learning process. It will, also, help motivate them to do their best.
By being prepared, arriving early the first day of class, introducing yourself as an instructor and going through the informational aspect (syllabus, etc.) relieves the level of stress among students. I have the students introduce themselves the first day which helps to create a sense of comfort in the classroom.
A positive first impression is important as such is more than physical appearance. The "appearance" represents the instructors grasp of the material and trustiworthiness. Also set forth is the instructor's enthusiasm (or lack thereof) and communicative abilities. All of these are crucial to gaining and holding the learner's interest.
The first positive first impression is important in starting a new class make the students think that the class instructor is very knowledgeable about the subject and that the students will have confidence that they will have an enjoyable learning journey with the teacher.
I feel that if you lead by example. Inform them of the rules and they let them see that you your self have to follow the same set of rules.
A positive first impression is important in the class just like it is in any situation. You only have 1 chance for a first impression and you want it to be a good one. you want a good imprerssion so your students will feel at ease and trust that they are in the right class and that you will teach them what they need to know.
First impressions are very important because the students are already judging the course and measuring on what the instructor has to offer. If the instructor shows that he/she is a qualified professional, the students should not have any 2nd thoughts about the course.
A first impression is a always good. It allows the student to have a role model to look up too. See what kind of professional is teaching them. Also when you introduce yourself too and give a little background, the students get an impression of why you are teaching
You have heard the saying that you have only one chance to make a good first impression. This is true for teaching. An instructor who is prepared and organized will help reduce student anxiety and provide a comfortable learning environment where the student feels imeediate support.
As an instructor you must make a positive first impression for student to want to learn from you. Never make yourself seem unavailable to students or they will not respond to your instruction.
If the student is provided a positive outlook on success inthe course at the beginning they will strive for a great outcome. It is important for the student to know that obstacles will come and challenges but to know they will be ok while taking the course they are more comfortable.
I want to set an example for my students.
