I will ask for questions , does everyone understand what Iam telling you. If there is silence Iknow there not getting it. From there we go into great detail & I will start questing the class. If nessary we will go to lab for hands on & show & tell. usually the first test I will know who needs some help.

Steve, during class lecture I often use several of the styles. For the tactile learner I often hand out or grab and pass around several components that will be discussed in the topic area. For the visual learners we often have some type of demonstration or application video showing the components I passed out and where they are located on the vehicle and what their purpose or function is in the vehicle. I usually also write down the objectives and the names of components on the board and additional information on the topic is usually given out as a handout or service information bulletin. The class time usually is about 50% lab so we talk about the topic in class and then go to lab to investigate the components on the vehicles.

When I am teaching the BMW material we generally assign them to read the section before coming to class. Then we lecture on the material and use powerpoint slides and sometimes pass around trainig aids of the subject. After that we bring the students to the lab and have them put their hands on it by making a repair or maybe just removing the component.

In the electrical courses that I facilitate to change the style of teaching for the learning style of the students fits in very easily. I like to rotate through the four styles of learning on an hourly basis if time will allow. Each hour will include Intro. And lecture. Some kind of reading from a hand out or the Blue tech. book. Power points, and or drawings on the white board. And I have found that having the student get out of their seats and participate in the demonstrations like for instance power flowing wiring diagrams helps not only with the group’s attention span but also keeps everyone engaged and learning.

Hi Jason- Welcome to ED 103! You have quite an active classroom - Bravo! I especially like that you have the students do the demos! Susan

In class I have the students read then we have the power point and I talk about what the power point is saying I pass training aids out and then we go to lab for hands no

Hi Chuck - you obviously are "keeping all the lights on for them" ( is that Motel 8 ad or something? (-; ) Seriously you are doing a wonderful job of addressing all the learning styles - I will wager that you are a very effective instructor! Best wishes - Susan

I will use all the styles of learning every day. I use web base training, lectures, power point and handouts. I also use trining aids and hands-on in lab.

When I am taking my Truck PM class through how to mount and demount tires, I start with a discussion of the procedure, while they look over the procedures steps in their books. I then have them watch a video where I stop it in parts to highlight what we have discussed. Then I take them out to the lab and have a student follow my directions to demonstrate how to mount and demount the tire. I then will have the students break off and try the tire themselves as I give them advice on how to make it easier.

Steve
one of my most favorite times is when I am teaching the 6.4L Ford Diesel engine performance class, this class alows me the use of demonstrations, power point, hands on experiance for the student and reading assignments. While each piece of the puzzle requires all students to do all things many times they gravitate to their most desirable method as their means of understanding. Love it when the lights turn on

Hi Steven - It's usually not realistic to expect instructors to taech to every style in every class. From what you describe , you do an excellent job at achieving a good balance!

I may not use all of the learning style techniques every single day but will use all the different styles during the three week course. Students who prefer learning through written or auditory do well with the required prerequisite web courses where they have the option of closed caption or auditory. The kinesthetic learners prefer the time in lab where they get to problem solve using their minds and hands. Virtually every day there is some lecture with powerpoint and the use of the white board which appeals to the visual and auditory learners.

This is something I do all the time. By use of power point, lecture, seeing the actual part or assembly, and then working on it, all learning types are covered. Teaching the class in this manner also helps me to identify easily the types of learning styles my students have.

When a class is doing research and appling that in lab as the instructor demos the proper use of
tools and equip. as they perform labs, that covers learning styles that helps students learn the required materials.

Hi Dennis - You are indeed teaching to all the styles - great job!

Hi Robert - You are certainly covering all the bases - well done!

A typical class will consist of the power point presentation supplemented with drawings on the whiteboard and lots of training aids being passed around for students to see and be able to recognize the parts being discussed. Before, in the middle of, or after the lecture, students will be asked to read the relavant material from their books. They will also answer ASE type questions to be sure they learned the important information. Then the students will go to lab to use what they have learned in a hands on situation.

Most of my teachings are a combination strategy.
There are certain classes, namely powertrain where this is alot easier to do than others.

When in course 19, I will talk about the notes in the lesson, give details, operation and diagnosis.
While doing so, I am drawing diagrams on the board, writting random question about the topic on the board, performing the work in front of the class and then from time to time, I will have group competitions for perfoming the task at hand.
While in lab, we are performing the tactile portion, reading of service manuals, and I am reitterating what was discussed in class.
I feel that throughout the courses that I teach, I am always making it a point to use all of the delivery strategies to accomodate all learners.

I have alot of variety when teaching phase 28. I use reading in class, backed up with powerpoint, plenty of training aids to demo how the parts work visually, and lots of time in lab. The lab work is often the first time some students get to use air tools, and they get an idea of what it's like to be a tech.

I try to use different styles and aids most of the time, but especially when i do not have a training aid or the subject is more complex.
