all the time when i lecture,i use pictures, draw on the board, pass out real parts to look at and feel.it keeps them engauged with the class
I do not beleive that I use all the styles while in the class. However during the course of a particular chapter I will use all the learning styles. The visual thru the use of the powerpoint and drawings. The auditory thru the use of the lecture or discussion for the chapter. The written word as we read the text book and other mateial for the chapter. And finally the kinesthetic we will go to lab and not only demonstrate the task but then have every student perform the tasks a numer of times to get it down.
Steve the lecture that I use all the styles is in a 5 gas lecture I have them read , I show power points I demo on how to use a 5 gas machine and I am always interacting with the students to make sure that they understand the information
Installation of the ignition system you must use all forms of teaching .Once it is understood its no problem but getting it across to all in the class shows how many different way you need to use to have a full understanding by all students.
many of the learnings in the classes i teach have combination aproaches. i will use the power point, than draw pictures to show what that looks like, than bring in an exact example of it and do it for them right in front of them, a demo if you will, therefore covering a number of different styles all at the same time, a good example of this is our flow bench learnings.
Hi Rose - the situation you describe comes up regularly and a good teacher will strive to come up with alternatives to help those students succeed.
I find that even when I am addressing all the learning styles, there are always some students who aren't grasping the content the first time through. Sometimes it's necessary to find new ways to say the same things, even after taking different learning styles into account.
Teaching my computer hardware class, I can actually say that I routinely bounce between all the styles listed in this course. Lecturing, videos of how things work, discussions, assigned reading, and physically manipulating the components. But, that sort of class lends itself to everything, whereas there are many classes that don't.
i can say there are times that you can't give all styles but you can try to give as much and then work with the students that need more, that is all we can do.
Hi Steve-Welcome to ED 103. Realisticaly it is unreasonable to expect that ANY instructor will teach to all the styles in every class. I do occasionally, as I teach a Leadership class. I use PPT, I lecture some of course, we watch a video of Martin Luther King or John Kennedy. Pretty much hits all the styles but in some disciplines this is tougher to do. The bottom line is - keep the learning styles in mind and you will do a good job!
