Every instructor should know how their students learn best. You can plan your lesson plans on your students learning style. For example I am a hands on learner so I learn best when I am doing hands on.

I find that knowing the learning styles of different students helps to motivate all the students. By using a few different style during a lecture you a sure to capture the attention on at least two or three students

I think this would be beneficial in handing out assignments , and taking assessments. If we give students homework and assignments that are closer to their learning style , we could better assess their performance. I think the students would retain the information and be more involved as well.

Hi Pete, Thanks for sharing some great ways to adapt delivery to the diverse learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Hi Ann-Marie, thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that it is important to encourage our students to learn to adapt to other styles for the reasons that you cite. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree. By knowing your students learning style, you can help facilitate a more engaged classroom and hopefully, they will be able to take what they learn into other courses and continue to build upon their knowledge.

I use the Barsch self-survey at the beginning of my culinary courses and analyze the scores to prepare alternatives to the lecture format. I find it valuable so that I can apply the proper method to my delivery of course content. Altering the use of having students take notes on the board, viewing power points and videos, demonstrating procedures and then having students practice that skill. Selecting a student to demonstrate or teach that skill to others then is very effective

Knowing students learning styles can help you dirtect your teaching efforts to a multitude of students. If they all learn differently, they need to be addressed differently.

Understanding your students will help better you as an instructor. Not only to get the info to the students, but as getting the interaction in the class to help the ones that are not getting it.

Hi Agnes, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is it in a nutshell - we need to do our best to reach every student in our classrooms! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Being able to vary my teaching style is a huge benefit. The variety can engage the students even more as well as help them practice other learning styles that aren't their forte. This practice can benefit the students as they continue in school (may come across an instructor with variation in their presentation/approach) and as they start their professional career which will almost certainly have varied ways to take in information.
With the exception of "rigid" students (who have a strong propensity to rely solely on the teaching style most conducive to their learning style), most appreciate the varied instructional styles in the class.

By understanding the student’s different learning styles it will allow me to have better instructional balance within my classroom. This will encourage classroom participation and learning. It will also encourage the student who appear less confident to express themselves.

Knowledge of students' individual learning styles is not only preferred, but in some instances, paramount to effective delivery of information/material. Different students aquire knowledge differently, therefore to adequately reach all parties in a class, instructors are wise to take such information into consideration when lesson planning. Failure to do so can, and in many cases does, impede student learning and ultimately academic outcomes.

Hi David, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are certainly varying your delivery to reach the diverse learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It is extremely important to know your student's learning style. You need to present the information is a variety of styles for all students to retain information. I use lecture, powerpoint, hands on and even have students give mini presentations as part of my program. There is always something for someone especially when they break down into groups....all for one and one for all. It is extremely important for feedback, without it, you are in the dark.
