Hi Olmarys- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree- it is always worthwhile to help our students to expand any of their horizons, including learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Andrea- Thanks for your post to the forum. I was so pleased to see that you mentioned that our students are our clients - absolutely! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

As a learning institution the student are our clients so in order to make sure they have a satisfactory experience the different learning styles should be incorporated in our curiculum

I think I got lucky in the area of addressing student learning styles- I lecture using power point slides, so catch the visual and auditory learners- every class has a lab component so appeal to the tactile/kinesthetic learners- while I'm teaching half the group 'hands-on' skills, the other half answers end-of-chapter questions or makes a 'quiz' for themselves to study from/give to other students for study purposes. The content I teach just lends itself to all 4 types- nice for me!

I feel it is important to vary your teaching style no only to match the students learning styles but to encourage them to consider and develope their abillities to learn through other styles

Because you have to reach your student to improve learning and comprehension

Hi Kassy _ Thanks for your post to the forum. great question! I LOVE YouTube! I find short videos that relate to the topic and use the clips for "Talking Point" discussions. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Students connect with material introduced to them in a way that matches their own learning style. If it resonates with them, then it will most likely spark interest. This is an important first step to learning and understanding new concepts. Once this happens, a bond is apt to form between teacher and student. The student may start to trust the teacher and be willing to stay engaged in the topic.

I am always searching for ways to draw my instructors away from the standard PPT/Lecture format. Once I provide some hands on /field trip type suggestions... they are usually well received by the students -- but the instructors tend to look at these as 'more work'.. Any suggestions on getting buy-in from instructors to think outside the powerpoint box?

Hi Eveleyn- Thanks for your post to the forum. I was pleased to see that you mentioned powerpoint "discussions". Using a ppt as a vehicle for discussion is great - much better than just reading slides as part of lecture! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Upon the first day of class it is very hard to know what a student learns from the best. When you pay attention to their questions and grades it is easier to follow the type of learning style they have or require.
I have found myself utilizing all of the different learning styles for the students within the first two weeks of class. I have found that most of them actually enjoy powerpoint discussions.

Hi Isabel - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a good mix of delivery styles with your learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Not all student learn from the same learning styles. We use all 3 styles with our students. We use a PPT for our visual learners, along with a lecture and examples for our auditory learners and hands on for the kinesthetic learners. All students learn from our approach.

I will use Powerpoints, handouts, videos and demonstrations. If an instructor will only use one method, some of the students will shut down and not be open to learning.

Individuals learn on different levels and receive information differently. Because of this, it is imperative for intructors to be able to relay the same imformation in different ways to reach each student effectively.

I think that it would make the learning experience as a whole much more enjoyable for each student. Offering different styles of learning would result in a higher retention of students, learning in each their own way and introducing other ways as well would keep classroom environment, attendance, and a sense of self confidence at the highest level.

The objective of a teacher is to have the students retain the information. There are various types of learners. We must work to meet our students (customers) needs.

Hi Aimee- Thanks for your post to the forum. Do you have anatomical models and diagrams that you can use? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I think it can be challenging to supply materials for visual learners in our field. We teach a Veterinary Technical program and for many of the courses it requires rote memorization of many new vocabulary words as well as complex and abstract ideas and processes. We try to use diagrams in the powerpoint presentations to reach those learners but it is challenging.

I find that students while they do have individual learning styles, tend to do best when there are multiple learning styles being incorporated into the classroom. I think in today's instant world where so much information is available right now students have a tendency to get bored easily. By incorporating the different learning styles into the classroom the students are engaged enough in the subject matter to become and remain interested in what is going on in the classroom.
