Hi Padmini - Thanks for your post to the forum. As you point out, we need to be very supportive of our students because, clearly, they are here because they want to learn. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Every student needs to feel included and they want to learn or they would not be there.

The approaches and resources have to complement the learning styles of the students because otherwise the students may become frustrated with the course material(s) and quit when it is unnecessary. I am an instructor at an allied health school. When I read the book's instructions about how to sterilize equipment or wash hands or the like, even though I already know the proper procedures, I too could benefit from actual hands-on learning in those types of instances. It is very important for an instructor to know and understand the best learning styles for his/her students in order to alleviate any confusion.

Hi Vanessa - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job teaching to the learning styles - congratulations! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It is important to be able to complement each individual learning style when instructing class because you will have a varience of learning styles throughout your class. In order to acheive the max learning potential you need to be able to reach each individual student through their learning style.

When I teach I attempt to use powerpoints while teaching the chapter, I put questions on the board and work through them, then I assign case studies for class work to be completed before students leave for the day. This is an attempt to reach all four learning styles.

this enables the students to relate to the topic and wuill be able to gather the information,
process and reatin the information and reproduce it with confidence.

Hi Joanne- It is really terrific how much more resources we have available to aid in out teaching. Also, I think that there is a much greater emphasis on faculty development in higher education than there used to be. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Providing different types of content allows us to reach each student’s learning style; especially in situations where we are not able to determine or prepare individual learning assessments. With larger class size, this method reaches most learning types and gives the students something to look forward to when coming to class. Interactive learning, written worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, and audio listening (for terminology) make it fun for the presenter and the students. I wish we had all of these tools when I went to school.

I like to use the powerpoint presentations along with the textbook and the CD. This covers most of the students' learning styles and it makes the presentation fun and interesting for me.

As instructors we want our students to gain as much information and understanding of the subject material as possible. To achieve this it is essential that we touch on all of the learning styles. This will help to include all the students in the room. It may also show others different ways that they like to learn that they never considered before.

It is important because it helps the instructor identify and apply differing teaching methods to try and reach all their students. This hopefully encourages maximum student participation.

I have used several of these learning styles with my students--works well.

Hi Emily - Thanks for your post to the forum. You shared a good summary of the importance of teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

The reason it is important to incorporate different approaches and resources that complement many different learning styles of our students is because they all receive information differently. Some learn better by listening to lectures and some need to actually do the activity to have a better understanding. Engaging your students through teaching different learning style methods will help an instructor deliver their message more effectively. Giving a simple quiz on learning styles can help better identify these approaches to assist in teaching students.

It is important to provide approaches to match the learning styles of the students so they can get the most from class. I teach in an online environemnt and try to mix up activities and information presentation to keep the students' attention.

Hi Dwayne- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, utilizing a variety of delivery styles is the best way to teach to the learning styles.

All students learn differently even if some learn through the same mode of learning such as visual. There may be several visual learners but their way of learning may be reinforced through auditory - their recitation, tactile, or reading. Within these reinforcing methods, the learner may have a system for themselves, therefore it is very important to have different approches and resources such as manipulatives, to help students learn, but it is equally important to know how to deliver and utilize them.

Hi Joel - Thanks for your post to the forum. I can see how culinary classes would limit what you could do to accomodate your written word learners. My suggestions would be to always have the recipes, Powerpoints, etc. printed out for them. You could also find an interesting culinary related article each day or week to share with the class. I feel that in a technical school enviroment we do a good job reaching most learning styles. However in a kitchen setting it is difficult to reach the written word learners, as they have limited view of the board.

Hi Shelia - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, definitely we deal with diverse learning styles. It is so important that we work to accomodate this diversity as much as possible. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
