Hi Diane - Thanks for your post to the forum and a very well written explanation of the value of teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Mike, I have wondered whether it is truly possible for students to adopt new learning styles. Your approach of blending several styles during the class period is a good one. Have you had some success in helping your students expand their preferred learning style to preferred learning styles??

Student success depends upon achieving some level of understanding (Bloom's taxonomy level) about a variety of concepts. They dedicate a certain amount of time to their studies due to numerous other obligations in their life. Therefore, it is crucial that they make the most of their time. If information is presented to them in a form that helps them understand more quickly, they will be able to learn about more concepts. A student who struggles with one concept will not have the time to learn the subsequent topics. This can lead to frustration and be very demotivating. Presenting the information to them in their learning style ensures time is used wisely and they'll make effective use of their time, thus successfully achieving their goals.

these helps the students in increasing their knowledge and skills as well as helping them with the implementations to what is their learning styles ( their comfort zone) ..thus increase their self confidence and productivity

I want my students to learn the best way for them so they can be successful and retain what they learn . So all the approch i nedd i will do to help them make it

All people not just students tend to learn in a variety of ways. We as instructors need to adapt to the different learning styles to assure the students are getting the information that we are teaching them.

Hi Dennis- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree - teaching to the learning styles can indeed be a challenge but I also believe that the challenge helps to keep us fresh! Doing the same things over and over is awful! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It's important to provide different approaches and resources so that each student can grasp the material in thier own way and feel successful. Using different methods can keep things interesting, but can also challenge the instructor to keep the class on track and everyone on the same page.

Hi Christina - Thanks for your post to the forum. I am sure you will find that knowing the learning styles is really usefull as you plan your lessons!

I am excited to conduct a survey of the learning styles of my students so I can better understand how I can help them succeed. I am also curious to assess my own ability to gage their learning styles based on how they have interacted in my class so far. I am already planning on doing this at the beginning of the quarter for any future classes that I teach.

Hi Thomas - thanks for your post to the forum. You make a good point - by teaching to our students' learning styles we do increase their comfort level which increases their level of success. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

This is how you reach the students... Especially early in the educational process.

The majority of my students favor VISUAL learning styles. I always make sure to vary colors, shape, scale, etc when presenting new material to the class.

I truly believe that it is important to have students work on their other (not preferred)learning styles. I find that if I blend several styles in a class period, it helps students adopt new learning styles.

They will be more successful more often when given the chance to take in information in their preferred style. Providing this comfort level often can motivate students for the rough patches.

As instructors it is important to make sure our students grasp the material and can use the knowledge in the appropraite environment to approve their efficiency.

Hi John-Thanks for your post to the forum. That is it exactly - the better we are at reaching our students by teaching to their learning styles, the more engaged they will be. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Particularly in a career college environment, it is critical to underscore the relevance of classroom presentations to their career goals. If you are utilizing an approach to multiple learning styles, it helps prevent them from "tuning out" and deciding that your class or session is irrelevant to their needs.

Keeping students engaged in the course material is critical to their success. Using delivery methods that implement a variety of learning styles keeps the class interesting to students with differing learning styles.

Hi Ryan - Thanks for mentioning the importance of also allowing students to complete projects etc. by using methods that fit their preferred leaning styles. Susan

If an instructor want maximum buy in or involvement from each of their students then mixing up delivery methods to accommodate all the learning styles is very important. Not only teaching delivery methods but method for student to complete methods. Some student may prefer to write stories or essays while others may prefer to draw their interpretation of the meaning of the material. My giving students the opportunity to explore their preferred method of assimilation may encourage further commitment to the class.

It's important to address the various learning styles of students so that each can learn as efficiently as possible and realize that all styles have validity. It's another way of respecting students.

When students are able to learn in accordance their learning style, they may better grasp and retain the material. The hard part is integrating them all in a class with many students all having varying learning styles.
