To increase the effectiveness of the time spent in teaching!

Hi Brenden - Thanks for your post to the forum! As I recall myself as a new instructor, nothing "flowed", but it all went from a "trickle" to a "flow" eventually. LOL Make sure that you interrupt your lectures often to have them break into small groups to discuss what you just taught and then maybe have each group write their ideas on the white board. Or add a video clip or pass around something that relates to your lecture. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree with you one hundred percent as far as hitting all four styles of learning. However, as a new Instructor it has been challenging to hit all of them in a flowing way. This Module has helped out a lot I just have to work it out from here. Any ideas to keep "hands on" students involed during lectures?

Thanks

While power point is probably the easiest delivery method for me, it may not best serve the learning style of some students. Therefore encouraging them to read the chapter before class and engaging class discussion can help those whose preferred method of learning is different.

This is important for their success in school and out. If they can understand their learning style now, this is only going to help them in the future. I also feel that understanding learning styles in the classroom helps us as instructors with motivation in our teaching. It forces us to continually change our courses, which in turn keeps them interesting to both the instructors and the students.

Hi Lanny - Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like that your study guides don't just give sample questions that may be on the test but require your students to do research to prepare. Instead of a "Memorization Guide" they actually DO get a "Study Guide" Great work!

Understanding the different learning styles is a help. In a large class enviornment there may not be opportunity to personally address every students individual style wether it is totally focused on a single style or a blend.
If the lecture offers up the facts - the knowledge, the display parts give a tactile approach and the lab time demands the combination, there is a good chance the education will become durable or somewhat permanent.
I like to use a study guide of sorts. Some students think "wow, here are all the answers I need" and they are correct. the guides are TOUGH!!!They will typically be 25-30 questions and some have 3 parts. There are scenarios that draw from previous lessons. Some need research.
If we discuss them thoroughly, we could spend more time on them than the original lecture.
The bottom line is that they are covering the material in great depth at their own pace(together if they desire),with the only judgement coming from themselves.

Here at the UTI Collision Department, we use I-CAR’s curriculum and supplement it with Hands on applications. This consists of presentations, objective worksheets, discussions, Q&A and practical application in the lab environment. This covers all on the learning disciplines successfully.

I have found it to be a great benfit to understand the learning styles. It helps to understand the need to use many different mehtods of teaching.

To maximize student comprehension of the course concepts being explored. By varying learning style strategies, instructors increase the percentage of success in terms of reaching more students via their individual learning style preferences.

Aids in the processing and retention of information presented.

It is important to provide apporaches and resources that complement the learning styles of my students because they have so many diverse learning styles.

Hi Brenda- Thanks for your post to the forum. You obviously maintain a very interactive classroom. Congratulations! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree that it is difficult to reach all four learning styles in one class setting, but it is possible to vary delivery methods through out the course in order to reach more students.
I teach in a "simulation lab" setting. Prior to each skill, we spend time reviewing the content and rationale. This is typically presented in a lecture (lead by instructor) or discussion (lead by student groups) style.
Once the content and rationale have been presented, a demonstration is provided and students are given time to practice "hands on". Students are assigned different groups so that they can learn from each other. At this point instructors rotate through different work stations to answer questions and offer feedback.

Yes, to help the student to understand how they learn the best, and to offer some options to enhance this.

by providing my students with approaches and resources that complement their learning style, I significantly increase their achievments.

Hi Richard- Thanks for your post to the forum. While we don't need to address every learning style in every class, as you mention, doing it as often as possible pays off in terms of student learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

everybody has a different way of retaining information. therefore it is important to use as many various teaching and material delivery methods as possible in order to ensure all students understand and learn.

Besides helping students take in the information you want them to learn, you are providing chances for students to feel engaged in the class and increased chances for success.

Students get the sense that the instructor know them and cares for them/
