we use short weekly or unit tests to gauge whether the students are grasping the material, or whether to cover additional material within a unit to increase learning.

We use quizzes and puzzles after each unit to see if the students got the lesson.

One of my formative evaluation, My students will give a oral presentation over each lesson.

Hi Nancy, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, Frequent feedback through timely assessments is essential!

With a vast amount of knowledge to be taught in a short period of time, I feel the formative methods are good because of the students interaction with each other and knowing where they are progress wise.

To assess students, weekly tests are administered along with skill assessments to assure they are on board both theoretically and practically.

Hi Sherry, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a nice mix of Formative evaluations! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I think quizzes in a lectrue setting are effective because it gives the student to answer the questions with the lecture.

I use games, student lead discussions, progress reports, and different teaching strategies as formative evaluation methods. The student finds this information helpful and fun. They all have online access to their grades so that they can see their progress 24/7.

Hi Kathleen, Thanks for your post to the forum. I also like to use group presentations where appropriate. This is good practice for what many students will encounter in the workplace.

I am a relatively new teacher, but I like to use group presentations for formulative evaluation. It is involves problem solving, coopertive interaction, self-assessment of their skills (ie do they prefer to write versus speak aloud to the group) and makes each student interact with the material. This also works very well for the Lab setting in which I teach. And it is a quick and easy way for me to see how and hat they have learned and give immediate feedback.

I have used weekly quizzes so the students can see how well their study techniques help them to retain material. Also, I have assigned projects from case studies where students use lecture notes to complete the papers.

Hi Robert, Thanks for your post to the forum. Absolutely - Application/skills assessment is essential in a field like surg tech!

In the lab we perform mock surgeries and I find that theyare a great tool for evaluating technique and prodecure step retention.

We ask the student to return demonstrate the proper way to perform a nursing skill

I agree, the more interactive situations they encounter the better their communication skills become as well.

Hi Andre, Good example of step-by-step formative evaluation!

The students are required to complete tasks based on the lecture material. These tasks are reviewed, graded, corrected...and often performed with repetition. The tasks will lead up to a "Final Exam", consisting of a culmination of the practiced tasks.

I could have group discussions about a topic that was just taught. Or have a short exam to assess the students understanding of the topic.

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your post to the forum. That pre-test definitely gives you a baseline from which to begin.
