Selecting testing formats

What are the criteria you use for selecting testing formats?

The criteria I use includes examining the course being taught, what the objectives and goals are, and the learning styles of the students.

Multiple choice & True or False lead to alot of guessing. I think short answer or fill in the blanks truely assess the learning of course materials.

i want to make sure they know the content and are not able to guess

In that licensing exams in my state use the multiple choice format, we create exams in the style that the student will face when taking the exam to familiarize the student with this style.

Hi Carolyn - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using a nice mix of assessment types. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I prefer to use a combination of testing formats, however due to the majority of classes thought by me are in the diagnostic medical arena, I utilize more the short essay format to assess the student's critical thinking. It is always up to the instructor to mold the formats depending the topic and class environment.

At our institution we have multiple choice, true fals, fill in the blank, questions. To my knowledge, for the program I teach, there are no essay questions. I do put math questions on my exams, because the students constantly need to be doing math, because if they don't use it or apply it, they will lose it. It is good to keep the memory fresh.

I love having the standardized test formats. I do my lectures from that and it saves time.

I enjoy the true/false and multiple choice. I also like to use diagrams with multiple choice answers. I like the way the actually make the student think a bit more about how to answer the question.

true and false, write a topic on a subject so they can demostrate theie knowledge, essay question and very little multiple choice

Between matching and multiple choices. Because I want them to think about the questions first before answering it.

To learn how much the student has learned.

Choosing the type of question will depend on the material and the subject being evaluated. Be sure to measure exactly the question to be evaluated is a challenge for a teacher. If it is a theoretical issue I usually use multiple choice exams and combined with true or false, and complete. To assess issues and practical skills I prefer to use fill in the blank, but also use graphics and diagrams.

The criteria tha I use is to review the material that was lectured, notes taken, and then choose questions that will show the students how much they learned in the course or subject matter. The students are encouraged by when they see how much they have learned not by what they failed to miss.

At my institution multiple choice and fill-in the blanks are the testing formats used to assess if students are learning class objectives. Criteria for selecting testing formats is dependent upon the course itself and instructor's preference.

Hi Scott - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job at incorporating varied assessment types. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Given that different testing formats engage different styles of learners, I do my best to incorporate various types of questions when writing tests - multiple choice, true false, fill in the blank (aka completion), and short answer.

I use mostly essay questions because it allows the students to demonstrate their problem-solving skills and shows they really know the material.

I use a variety of methods including true/false and correct the false statements, multiple choice, and matching. Since it is jsut a 5 week mod I do not use essay or short answer.
