Graphic organizers help students in their learning efforts by giving a pictorial way of showing relationships. Because they organize information into a structural form it helps students to decode and recode this information as well as integrate with other content.
Clare,
This is such a great way to get your students personally involved in creating a graphic image that is personal to them in relation to the content being shared. It is for sure that they are going to retain the information at a much higher level when they conclude this activity.

graphic organizes are a great teching tool. It helps put them in the work environment with tangeble objects they can see and touch.
Most of my students are very visual (Picture oriented). Given the chance to draw, most students will be excited to engage. I like to take them through a guided Graphic organizer so that the entire class is drawing the same thing but they are allowed their creativity to chose which colors/pencils/pens they would use and how they would best remember the material.
Joyce,
These a simple yet powerful learning tools for students. They help students to see how everything fits together in terms of the total learning picture.

I agree. The pictures that graphic organizers form help to decode the information better for the students as well.
Juanito,
The key word here is graphic. The more images we can send their way so they can internalize them in their brains the better. The more senses used in learning the greater the retention of content is going to be.

Graphic organizers are great tools to learn and remember concepts that are otherwise very hard to comprehend and retain. I my class , I usually give handouts that show outlines of the topics needed to be learned . I also give my students lots of pictures , illustrations and diagrams relevant to the lesson.
This is particularly useful for visual learners. It puts the content idea into a visual cue that that is linked. We do not remember how things are written - we think in pictures already. Even when reading - how many people really "sound out" a word - they know what it is when they see it because of education and experience. Graphic organizers take advantage of that part of our learning methods to get related material into our heads.
Saroj,
They help students to see the total or parts of the total however you present it. This way each student can see the elements that are being presented and the content they need to learn.

In teaching court reporting software, I have used building pyramids in teaching the oganization of files and the effects of quick and efficient retrival. These are valuable, practical strategies that will not only benefit them in the field but will also be beneficial to them during their schooling.
Graphic Organisers are very useful resource.Students who are visual leaners benefit from that

Miriam,
They are such a great resource for students to use. Thank you for sharing how they are working with your students. I know this information will be of help to other instructors that are thinking about using them.

Graphic Organizers helps students decode and recode information. For students who may be more visual learners preparing a chart/graph/table can help them to "see" the information in a more clear form. Seeing key words can also help students as they will have less to memorize and it can help set up cues to recall more information.
Debra,
This is why I use them as well. They help my students to see the parts of the concept we are studying as well as the whole when we put all of the segments together. They are a visual way of understanding abstract concepts.

Hi Dr. Meers --
Graphic organizers can help students isolate the necessary steps in a process or relationships among key concepts. Filling these out can also be of real help to students whose learning is enhanced by a type of hands on work to aid them in retaining information, and seeing the way ideas relate can be of help to visual learners was well.
Debra
Jessica,
This is a great activity for students to do. Thanks for sharing it with us because I know other instructors will be able to use this strategy.

I haven't used it in my previous class but I can use this technique in the future.
An activity I enjoy is after teaching a concept, I have students create a graphic organizer to aid in their learning of the new material. Students can share and edit their organizer to help understand the concepts clearly.
It helps students see the concept as a whole.
