Gretchen,
So true and this is one of the big values that comes out of using graphic organizers. They get to see both segments as well as the big picture as they progress through the course.

ROBERT,
I agree and am a big fan of them. They are one more resource to go to for the students as they put concepts together.

Edward,
This is one of the big values of using them. They help to keep the students in sequence while showing them the outcomes that they are striving for.

Many students need to see it in order to grasp the concept. When teaching how to make a cornet bag, demonstrating it and having a chart showing each step helps them to understand and retain the information.

I have been using concept maps for the last 3 years . It’s a way to present the information to the students that aids in retention and usage.

We use it in the automotive field to prepare techs their skill on diagnosing specific problem areas of a vehicle. They need to start at a particular step and from the result of that step they will be guided to the next test or result.

Kathleen,
Helping students to see the components or segments of content using graphic organizers proves to be extremely valuable in moving them forward in the material. They get a more global perspective this way and yet get to see how the parts fit together.

Graphic Organizers provide students with a simple but efficient AID that highlight important material, clearly shows relationships in the subject, guides their train of thought when facing a specific situation or it may make obvious multiple solutions to a discussed problem. The use of this technique usually simplifies the intake of new material while giving a big picture to the student.

It breaks down subjects into smaller parts and isolates the content. I never thought to use something like this, but it will work for the breakdown of facial steps, so the students can understand why one step follow the next. Excellent Idea!!!

Kristy,
Great way to illustrate components and how they fit together. Gives a mental picture from which the students can operate. Thanks for sharing your success with using this method with us.

We use this often in our field, but refer to it as mind mapping. It is essentially the same concept and works great!!

Graphic organizers help students understand like processies in an effort to remember specific processes

William,
Your field is full of such presentation formats and by using the flow charts and graphic organizers you are giving them the opportunity to see how each of the different parts fit together to complete the procedure being preformed.

medicine instruction is all about flow charts and students really do well if the can master them

Michael,
Example and illustration bring value to the content for students. They start to see as a result of examples and illustrations the relevancy and application of the content and this increases their ROI in the course.

I also find that using examples and illustrations seems to work best.

William,
This is a great tool and one we need to bring back into the classroom for the benefit of students.

I remember many years ago an instructor taught the mind mapping tool, I still use it to this day. Visually colorful and concise all on one page.

James,
Good plan for how to use graphic organizers. They help students to put the parts of the course and the topics of the day into perspective and to create a learning sequence.

I can see how they can help by simplifying more complex ideas into and easily organized graphic. They can also help students connect different concepts in their heads using a simple graphic. I think I'm going to start using more graphic organizers in many of my classes than I already do because of their simplicity and practicality.
