Anna Marie,
They really do since so many college students today do not have good note taking and study skills. Any help we can offer along these lines will be valuable to them.

Outlines of any form help in the note taking process. They also aid in the review and study of course material.

Cheryl,
Right. They give students a way to put all that they are learning in perspective so they can see the parts as well as the whole of the subject.

it helps the students find the important information that they will need for future refrences

Jennifer,
Teaching is experimentation so it is good to try different approaches and see what ones are the most effective. Sounds like you have found some ways that really help your students in their learning processing.

Alain,
Visuals really help in a field like medicine. They help students to see how the parts fit together and contribute to the welfare of patients.

i have a few students that benefit from this style, however... more video recordings and powerpoints seem to register w/ their learing styles

I usually use graphs to show students the problems and then they can easily assimilate what the problem is and what possible solutions are available. This usually leads to a lot of discussions in my lectures in medical ethics.

Graphic Organizer is a tool for reminding you all the steps to reach an objective or an application. It is better that the student prepare his own organizer under the supervision of the instructor to avoid mistake .

Cynthia,
Learning aides like this help the students to internalize the information that has been shared. Through the use of graphic organizers they can get their sequence of thought put in order and then decode the material.

The use of color, pictures, or different fonts to create this puzzle that is fitted together is often happen as graphic organizers to help students to organize their learning efforts.

Graphic organizers keep the notes and focus concise. It also keeps their thoughts on one page.

It can help students break down what is important to remember and what they might need to back and review. It helps them filter out the unimportant information.

Glenn,
This is such a strong reminder for the students. The need to develop expertise in understanding cause and effect in relation to problem solving. By doing so they are going to be more accurate in their problem solving with less of an error factor.

I like the cause and effect when students are problem solving tasks that have a number of possible solutions. the student can quickly see the results of different causes and effects.

Michael,
Thank you for sharing this resource with us as well as your system for moving students through the essay process. The ability to communicate clearly is such a valuable expertise to have no matter what your career area may be.

I use graphic organizers to help my student write their essays. These tools are available throught the online content within my distance learning course. One such tool is a thesis generator that graphicaly walks them through developing a thesis statement.

Phil,
Mind maps is along the same line. The key is to find a method or procedure that enables the students to see parts as well as the whole of what they are studying. In using the mind maps I am sure you have experienced how your student start to see the parts and then how they all fit together. This is one of those "ah-ha" moments in teaching. That is what we are striving for with strategies like graphic organizers and/or mind maps. You are on the right track. Keep up the good work.

I had never heard of graphic organizers prior to this class. We use flow charts all the time in our line of work. I never thought to put together a flow chart of the learning processes. I have had to use and have taught my students to use “mind maps”. Is this completely different than a graphic organizer, or something along the same lines?
