Zack,
We need to bring to the classroom/lab passion for our field and enthusiasm in getting to teach it. This is a great combination for generating student engagement and excitement.

The more the student is interested in what they are learning the better they will do. Now the instructor plays a huge part in having good material, keeping class interesting and good clean work environment.

Julian,
Good observation. Yes, passion for one's content area or field and enthusiasm in sharing knowledge about it increases student motivation resulting in higher retention.

Tamika,
Through your smiles and pleasant personality you are setting the tone for a comfortable and supportive classroom. This is the foundation for a positive and engaging learning environment that the students will respect and enjoy.

432 replies on the subject of passion and enthusiasm, tells me that this must be one of the keys to student retention

Personally it shows them that I am human also. I'm always smiling, greeting the students, asking how they are, etc. This gives them a chance to see how much I appreciate them for being here.

When I am lecturing, I always try to make it as interesting as possible. Making things rhyme and telling a personal work experiece story that can relate to the topic being discussed.

If they can't see that I am excited to teach them, then I can't expect them to be excited about learning.

Naila,
How do you bring enthusiasm to your classes?
Gary

great enthusiasm goes a long way!

Martin,
I agree with you on this one. We don't bring enthusiasm for teaching nor passion for our field it is for sure the students won't be engaged.
Gary

You bet it does. I find if I keep my enthusiam at a high level, my students stay stimulated.

Freddie,
How do you demonstrate to your students that you care about them and their success?
Gary

if a student see that you care about them,it makes them wants to learn more.

Gayle,
It is for sure that if an instructor does not bring passion for the field nor enthusiasm about teaching it to the classroom or lab the students won't be engaged. We need to keep our energy up throughout all of our interactions with students.

If the instructor is not excited about what he/she is teaching, and the field the students are going into, why should the students be excited? Enthusiasm makes a subject easier to learn. It's hard to remember something you don't care about.

John,
Right you are about enthusiasm catching. It is fun to get a group of students excited about the subject being taught and helping them see how the content is moving them toward their career goals.

Margaret,
Passion and enthusiasm are two ingredients for teaching success. If we are not excited about teaching our content it is for sure the students won't be either.

I agree. If a teacher has the fire and passion for a subject, it will show in his or her teaching. Enthusiam will catch on like wildfire.

I have a hugh passion for what I teach. You must nave motivation yourself in order to pass it on to your students.By doing this it will grow to your students then they will enjoy your class and stay.

Jackie,
Thank you for these comments about taking care of yourself. This is an often forgotten part of being an educator. We give and give and then one day we find our bucket empty and as a result we lose our effectiveness. Yes, we need to take care of ourselves and have a balance in our lives if we are to remain effective for the long haul.

Jessica,
I love these types of sessions because it is so exciting to watch the students contribute and become engaged. I like the way to have the students balance negative with positive. This requires that they see the big picture related to that topic and this is a part of becoming a critical thinker.
