Enjoying teaching and truly liking your students is the key to enthusiasm in the classroom.

Enthusiasm, effort and energy are vital for the overall success of the student and instructor aswell.

Tracy,
I agree with you about enthusiasm. We need to bring our A game to the class each time it meets. If we are not passionate about what we are teaching and excited about sharing our knowledge with others then we should stop teaching.

Instructor enthusiasm has a great influence on student retention. I believe instructors in Career Colleges must show enthusiasm in instruction because the student is entering a specific field that the instructor is connected to. If the instructor is not enthusiastic about the field of study, what hope does this give to the student that is entering the field?

Instructor enthusiasm influences student retention immensely. If you as the instructor is not excited about the material you are teaching, the students will pick up on this and it will make them think it to be less important overall. I believe attitude stems from the top, so the instructor needs to be positive and excited in what they are presenting so the students will in turn maintain the same positive energetic attitude.

Rachael,
If we don't bring enthusiasm it is not going to be there. If we are passionate about our field and excited to share our content we have set the stage for a successful learning experience for our students.

Instructor Enthusiasm is relevant in that it draws the students into the objective of the lesson while possibly entertaining them. Instructor enthusiasm also brings a level of industry standard importance of key points and/or skills necessary for the students success. Instructor enthusiasm is motivating and has a positive effect on how students engage with the their classmates and the instructor themselves.

Scott,
This is so important for student engagement. By being enthusiastic you can capture the attention of the students while in turn will assist them in learning the required content.

An instructor has to be enthusiastic about what he/she is teaching especially in a career college. Students want to know that they are learning a new skill which can be challenging, fun, and valuable for them. An enthusiastic instructor reinforces the students decision to continue their education and helps them to see how exciting their new career field can be.

Damian,
Good observation because it is right on target. If we feel comfortable and confident our students will feel such. Our enthusiasm and passion for our content helps to "sell" it to our students.

The student directly feeds on the instructor. I have noticed that in classes I teach on a regular basis I have developed much more confidence and the students have much more fun during the class. When I teach a class I am not farmiliar with it take a bit to get it together and my students notice it right away

Ana,
If you are not excited about your field it is for sure the students won't be. Enthusiasm spreads so we need to bring it each time we teach.

Instructor enthusiasm directly influences student retention because an active and engaging instructor keeps the class interesting. No one wants to sit in a boring and dragging class. A lively class will make class more enjoyable and the word will get out.

Todd,
One thing we know is that if we are not excited about our content it is for sure the students won't be. We need to bring passion and excitement about what we are teaching each time the class is held.

Instructor enthusiasim is critical for a student to learn and retain the material. Some subject matter can be rather dry, so if you use different teaching methods to teach the material, and show examples on why the information is important in their field of study, they will tend to retain the information.

Ethel,
If we don't bring enthusiasm to the class it is for sure it won't happen. When we are passionate about our content and supportive of our students then we are going to have engaged students and excitement in the classrooms and labs.

Enthusiasm is a valuable quality for anyone, regardless of the kind of work one does. When it comes to being an instructor, all of your energy levels count. The students feed off of the instructor, if an instructor isn't enthused about the course they're presenting then the students attendance and retention will soon show. Enthusiasm is attractive, so therefore the students will come back wanting more of what the instructor has to offer.

Jacqueline,
The human factor is what engages learners and your approach really moves that forward from the very first class meeting. Also, knowing a bit about yourself helps them to understand that you have been where they are and in a general sense still are since you are working on your doctorate while balancing all the other parts of your professional and personal life. i wish you much success with your graduate program.

As an instructor, I feel students need to know we are human and this is not simply a job to us.

At the first day of class, we all provide a one minute introduction of ourselves. I allow my students to learn about me not only as their instructor but that I am a mom, a wife, a student mentor, and presently a student pursuing a doctorate degree.

It is helpful for the students to have a certain amount of insight which enables them to feel you are more approachable. Once you make that personal (more human) connection with your students it will absolutely influence your student retention rate.

Ken,
Good caution, thank you for making this point. We need to bring enthusiasm to our students but within a framework that they can see the value of why we are excited about our field. This is what will sell our content to them.
