I pass out the syllabus and thoroughly go over what is expected on a week by week basis. I'll return to the syllabus weekly to reinforce what is expected to be completed by the end of each week.

Hi Karen,
Distributing a calendar is a great idea! Our adult students with so many other responsibilities would appreciate having a calendar with due dates. It will surprise you to see how your students will utilize their calendar on a daily basis to prepare for upcoming assignments.
Patricia

Hi Karen,
I do not utilize the logsheet, but you certainly can allow students access to review it. You just need to come up with a set of rules.
Patricia

I agree starting with the goals and expections of the class on the first helps. Student seems to relax more and focus on the class work more.

I also take a systematic approach. The students always know what to expect when they see me. I think it makes the students more comfortable overall excpecily older students.
I also find it helpful to review the syllabus a week or two into the course as a refresher.

In addition to a syllabus and calendar each class I write a brief outline of the day on the board. I also include upcoming due dates for assignments or announcements that pertain to the class/school.

I encourage students to email me if they miss a class session. I will update these students on any dates or announcements I made during class.

Nicole, I also use the scheduled dates on assignments, tests, etc and expect that each student is prepared irregardless of attendance in the prior weeks class. Glad there are others that use this approach.

Is the logsheet something that you allow the student to access to review?

On the first day I hand out a syllabi that outlines the objectives, class expectations, any school policies that students need to be reminded about along with information that will be covered weekly in class along with an assignment sheet.

I try to be very detail oriented because I primarily teach adult students with families, work, etc.

My assignment sheet includes date due along with the details of the assignment.

Should I also distribute a calendar with dates noted?

I hand out a weekly class plan with the due dates of the assignments. I also show the portal on an overhead screen and I also write it on the board. I even verbally give the information at times.

Hi Paula,
I have noticed that if you issue one zero to a particular student for not having their work, students really use this as a wake up call. Trust me, the word gets around.
Patricia

Janet,
I really like your idea of a logsheet with due dates. On my perspectus, I do include those dates, however, it seems the students pay little attention even though I remind them at the end of each class what is due for the following week.
Thanks for the idea.

Making a relevant syllabus and one that is clear and concise is very important. I also refer to it many times during the course.

I go over the syllabus the first class session and again in the second or third class session, just as a review of what we talked about the first time. I also try to prepare a more detailed schedule of what will be going on in class and what assignments are due, etc., and hand these out in class every 2 weeks to cover any schedule changes, modifications, assignment changes, etc.

I used printed page, verbal explanation followed by Q & A period to ensure the students knew the course expectations.

Hi Doria,
A set schedule is a big help. Even adult students need deadlines and structure.
Patricia

I like the idea of a set schedule. It helps them know what to expect. I may have to try this!

I will distribute the course syllabus on the first day of class and explain to them that the syllabus will be the instructor and student's guide throughtout the course. This will serve as the guidelines of the course. Also, Iw ill encourage my students to ask questions if anything on the course outline is not clear. Further, I will emphasize the importance of meeting the deadlines for assignment and how it will affect them if they did not do the assignment or submitted them late.

A first day of class group syllabus coverage. On teh very first day of class as an entire class we cover point by point the details of the syllabus for the entire class. I hand out a blank calandar for that month so the students are able to make notations of specific due dates for special assignments as well as exams
