Hi Keelan,
It is always best to make everything clear to students so that complaints are minimized.
Patricia

it is always best to go overwhats expected with the course and how the student body will be graded so in the near future there wont be any disagreements

I review the syllabus in detail and ask each student if they have any questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns.

I like to make sure the requirements stand out. I will place them within boxes to make the content look different than the remainder of the syllabus. In addition, I will place the due date in bold and italize it as well.
I also will do some "house keeping" before I begin my lecture for that day, and give verbal reminders of what is due for the next class period. in addition to asking if they have any questions about what I just reiterated to them about the upcoming assignment.
Finally, if I really want to make sure the students are aware of when an assignment is due, I will place a reminder announcement on Blackboard. This way students will see it before they log in to check there grades for the course.

After I cover the syllabus in detail on the first day, I also include weekly and daily breakdowns of what is expected, including reading assignments in preparation for lecture days, homework assignments, and hands-on prep days. I also break larger assignments (like research papers) down into more manageable pieces, and assign due dates to each piece (Topic choice, research materials list, outline, rough draft, final draft). This keeps the students on task, and prevents them from writing their paper the night before it is due.

Posting the weekly announcement about what is due is a good idea. I go over it in our live chat but not everyone is there for the live chat. Thank you for the suggestion.

The first day of each mod, I hand out the syllabus and go over it in detail. This lets the students know exactly how I grade and what their responsibilities and my expectations are within the class. Any questions can be answered at this time. I also make sure my email address and work phone are located on the syllabus so I can address any questions they might have later or are too embarassed to ask in class.

Yes because they don't always pay attention like they should or they forget. I always want them to be prepared.

Hi Nicky,
You cover a lot of bases to ensure your students know exactly what is expected of them. Communication is key.
Patricia

I post them on the calendar available online to all students.
They are written on the syllabus
I mentions them in class

I would have gone over the course materials to fully prepare for the class I will instruct. I will clearly present to the class all materials including, the syllabus, lecture information, exams, and the grading process of the course to the class. By doing this I believe it keeps the class’s attention and it also shows that I am an expert in the subject matter; this always keeps the class motivated and involved. It also shows that I really want to succeed.

Hi Karen,
CONTRACT means business. Students understand how serious things are when a signature is secured. Students are now held accountable for knowing what is required of them by signing the contract.
Patricia

Hi David,
Students love to hear real stories as they apply to the lesson. Practical experience gives students more as to what to expect in the workplace.
Patricia

I use actual occurrences based on my many years of experience in the subject.

The first day of class I go over all the course requirements with them in detail. After I go over them I ask if anyone has any questions over any of the material and course requirements.
In addition, I give the students a contract to sign stating they understand the course requirements.

I use examples and I reiterate it whenever I can, which shows the students the importance of the requirements.

Hi Tara,
When you secure a student's signature, the student understands the level of importance of what is expected of them. By securing one's signature, you can always refer back to the signed documents if any probems about not knowing would arise.
Patricia

By going over the syllabus verbally, giving tham a copy and asking the students if they have any questions. At the following class I will ask again if they have any questions concerning the requirements.

This is an essential part of the course. If this is not clearly defined issues can arise. I make it more than clear where I stand on laptop use during class. I have all my expectations written in the course syllabi and go over the syllabus ont he first day of class. I then have the students sign a sheet saying they have read and understood all requirements.

I make sure the syllabus contains all the course requirements. After I hand it out I go over it with the students item by item and then address any questions that the students may have regarding the requirements. As each assignment comes due through out the course, I make sure to remind the students in advance that it is coming up and explain again what the requirements are.
