Some of the examples I use in class to make my course requirements clear is to give them a syllabus, write it on the board, and have the students repeat back to me what they understand. I sometime give quizzes on course requirements to see whose really paying attention.
On the first day of class I like to go over the syllabus. I go over it in detail and when getting to the course objectives I like to tell the students why it is important for them to learn what is slated for them and how they can use it in their futures.
First the instructor must clearly understand all materials and be fully prepared to present and keep the class motivated and allowing class participation. This not only shows that the students understand the materials, but are applying themselves and taking an active part in their chosen field of education.
