Hi Lori,
Timely feedback says a lot about you as an instructor. You should be concerned/caring enough to want to know how your students are progressing.
Patricia
Timely feedback is incredibly important. It shows that you care about your students and consider yourself to be a partner with them in their educational journey. Clear, concise feedback will help a student hone in on academic as well as professional skills and better understand what you expect from them on future assignments.
Lori
Hi Mary,
We need to monitor our students grasping of the materials, simply by following up. As an educator it should really matter to you as to whether your students are getting it or not.
Patricia
Hi Debbie,
Yes they do, they also need to understand that doing assignments are very important, therefore as instructors we must follow up.
Patricia
Students have to know that assignments are part of the curriculum and that the instructor is reinforcing what they were taught in class.
To know whether they understand the topics, whether they need help in applying the reading and assignmentsto the main topic.
It is important for a teacher to follow up on assignments because it demonstrates to the students that the teacher is serious about the course requirements. Furthermore, the teacher demonstrates accountability to the students. If students witness this behavior, they will imitate it.
Hi Chantal,
We get from our students what we expect! If we expect our students to do homework, we should follow up with the assignments. When students know that their assignments will be checked; the majority of the students will do the assignments.
Patricia
It help the student stay focus and making sure the they have the right answer
Ms Grant
It is critical to follow up for two reasons. First, we are role models for their future success. By "walking the walk", we show them they are held accountable and so are WE. Secondly, students need to use the work that we are giving them to study and flow through the course. We can't expect them to succeed if we don't give them the correctred inofrmation to do so.
I agree, but I also give myself due dates to have the assignments returned so the student dont think I dont care.
It is important to follow up because if they went to the trouble to do it you have the responsibility to grade/review it. In math when I grade their homework I get a clear picture of what they understood and didn't understand. I do my best to return homework and tests the next class meeting. I find that if I get lazy and do not keep up I get overwhelmed with the volume of the work that I need to do. I try to assign my homework with the understanding that my class is important but so are their other classes and they have lives to live as well. I try to make it enough that they get some practice but not so much that it takes all their time and they get bored with it. They have enough to do without busy work.
Hi Elizabeth,
Great points mentioned. As their instructor we should be caring and concerned enough to want to know how our students are grasping the concepts.
Patricia
Following up with assignments makes the student accountable. I always let them know they are the one who is accountable not only for their assignments but also for their life in general. THis is a very important attribute for employment when they are finished with school.
Hi Arlene,
Our students are way too busy just to have busy work. Every assignment should have a purpose and should therefore be given credit for completion.
Patricia
It is important for the students to know that they are not just completing busy work. Since I teach Algebra, they need to practice the problems. Then we go over them in class.
1). You keep them accountable for doing the assignments
2). You can see how well they have comprehended the new material and go over any questions
3). It helps students see the relevancy of the course.
4). By working the assignments into a class discussion, students often gain more from the reading/assignment after discussing it with their peers
5). It helps keeps students on track so that they will pass the class and not get left behind.
Hi Nancy,
I agree 100% effort! We expect timeliness from our students and for them to do what is expected, therefore we should act accordingly.
Patricia
I agree that it is a matter of respecting your students and showing them they are valuable. If they are going to exert effort and put time into an assignment, then I feel it is my duty to do the same to correct that assignment... and return it to them promptly. I always try to put myself in the shoes of my students and act according to how they would appreciate for me to act. Immediate follow-up to assignments only makes sense!
Hi Jill,
This is a way to let all students know that you are serious, and you really care about their success.
