Hi LeeAnn,
You're fair! I like how you stick to your rules, policies, and procedures, therefore, I know that your students take you seriously.
Patricia
Folowing up creates a consistency that the students respect and understand. It also gives students who excel a chance to move at a faster pace . Students who have difficulty have extra credit assignments they can choose to do thus giveing both responsibility and opportunity.
I need for my students to know that I am serious about their success in my classes. I often give "pop" quizzes on reading assignments. If the student is unprepared for that quiz they learn a valuable lesson. I am clear from day 1 about my make up policy and I do not stray from that. I stress to the students how important the imformation is to their overall career and that they should make every attempt to meet me half way. I am a firm believer in communication being the key. Therefore, I ask that my students talk to me about any situations that may hinder their abiltiies to complete assignments on time.
That's a great saying to remember. The assignments are a great learning tool and sometimes taking the time to further explain that to the students can help the situation.
Thanks, Sherri. That's great insight on broader aspects of student assignments.
I like to follow up to make sure they are understanding what is being taught to them.
Students need to know that their assignments are important. It is alot of work, but I grade them all to create a feedback loop. And of course, those who don't do their assignments, miss out on prompt feedback an loose points. I will meet with those students privately. It is always important to remind students that deadlines are a part of the working world. Plus assignments are more than just projects and homework, they are time management skills, organizational skills, grammar skills, emotional maturity skills, etc. etc.
Hi Gregory,
I totally agree. If you become lax as an instructor with following up with assignments, your A students will become lax too. You should always show interest and an aggressive approach as an educator.
Patricia
Because students will understand that you will enforce standards. Even the best students will test this. Once they know you will follow up and check, even if not 100% of time, they are more likely to do the assignments and come better prepared. It also helps instructor assess learning.
Hi Cecilia,
Instructors should want to know if there students are grasping the concepts or not. One way to make sure students are understanding is to follow up on clas assignments.
Patricia
It is important because it shows the students that you are serious about their learning and them completing all tasks. According to the module, failure to follow up may cause students to think that the instructor does not care and may cause the student to stop putting effort into the work to complete. If they know you will follow up, they will be more likely to put a little more effort into their overall work.
It is part of the curriculum and my educational plan. Both parties student/teacher are acountable for all assignments. I stress to my class that this shows their progress in learning which will help them thrive in their chosen careers.
Hi Brian,
They "why" of the assignment is very important. Once students understand the benefit of the assignment they develop a sense of excitement and motivation. Our students are way too busy outside of school to be given just busy work.
Patricia
Hi Leslie,
I understand your perspective as to why you have students check some assignments. I have known some instructors to have their students check their papers because the instructors do not want to do it.
Patricia
To me it is important to follow up so that the students realize the work isn't just 'busy work' meant to take up time but that there is some purpose to the assignment.
We have assigned projects in addition to tests in several of the course segments. These projects are intended to either broaden a student's knowledge base through outside work or to give them a taste of real world applications for the given segment.
I use the follow up time to keep them focused on why they are doing the assignment rather than what the specific assignment is.
One of the main reasons is to ensure the concepts or skills are being fully understood by the students. This critical if the course is a baseline or building block to the next requirement. It is serve as a measure of how successful you are as an instructor.
I feel that it is important to follow up on assignments and readings because it lets the students know that you are serious about their education, your job and it holds them accountable.
I like to have the student check their own work, when it is an assignment that they have the ability. They then see where they have made mistakes. They still have to turn the work into me for credit and this give us the opportunity to discuss any questions they have about errors and why the were errors. In some cases, if the entire class sees that the same error is common, then we can go back and cover the subject again in a little different way so they understand it.
Leslie
Feedback from the instructor is vital to a student’s success in our class. Following up on assignments can also serve as a self evaluation tool for the instructor to see if students have learned what you were teaching.
This provides the learner with needed feedback in areas that the learner needs to reflect back on as well as allowing them to adjust thier organizations skills and time management. Plus, by providing and following up with student assignments, this in turn alerts the learner understand that the facilitor is truly interesed in their learning and meeting expectations of the course.
