Hi Doris,
They will certainly take the work for a joke if you do not follow up, even though it is to benefit them.
Patricia

Hi Jeffrey,
Absolutely, this is certainly one way to use following up on assignments. We better know if our students are grasping the concepts or not.
Patricia

If you don't follow up, they will not complete the work.

I totally agree cause if you don't think assignments are important, your students wouldn't think they are either

It gives us a chance to evaluate the progress of the class and where they are in curriculam and we taylor our lecture to better compliment the strong points and strengthen the weak ones of the class.

This is important so students are motivated to do the assignments. After doing this lesson, I had the idea of preparing a reading guide for each chapter I assign. This will let me know whether students have actually done the reading, and will help them focus on the important ideas and concepts as they read. Knowing the quizzes will be taken from the important concepts will help them see the importance of reading and completing the study guide. I believe students also learn the most by seeing my feedback on their assignments.

This was covered well in the course material. Students needs to know that deadlines are deadlines and that they apply to everybody. Of course there will be extenuating circumstances occasionally that can be examined on a case by case basis. I always tell students that if they are struggling to meet a deadline, they should come talk to me at the earliest opportunity rather than leaving it until the due date.

Hi Kathi,
Failing to follow-up as a manager is awful. What a sure way to give your business a bad name.
Patricia

To ensure they are doing the required work

Hi Lana,
Great response! In order to create a sense of importance, assignments must be graded and even tested on.
Patricia

Hi Donna,
When things are clear, it does make for a happier time.
Patricia

What I really try and stress with my students that are eventually going to be managing their own businesses is some of the most common mistakes managers make. The most common mistake is failing to follow-up and follow through. I give them numberous examples of how people when given and inch they will take a mile. Failing to follow-up is giving them that inch.

As human beings we are "wired" to determine if something is necessary or not in our life. This can be debated as to whether it is a learned behavior or a genetic trait.

Either way, if we do not find the assignments and/or reading we have been given are of any importance; then, we will simply not do them.

By grading and returning assingments in a timely manner and giving feed back to the students, we are showing them the assignments ARE necessary and important to their education and learning experience for their careers.

To make sure they understand how important the reading assingments are, there need to be questions in class, assignments and even exams that come directly from their reading and perhaps were not discussed in class (unless of course the specific material was brough up in class by a student who had done their reading). It is important to stress to students there is so much material to be read, that not all information is covered in class - but we will make sure the objectives are clear as to what they are to be learning from their reading.

This has many benefits. It first sets the expectation tone of the course. By reviewing, commenting on, and overall evaluating assignments you are telling your students they are important...they are important enough for you to grade; therefore, they are important enough for them to complete.

It is also a way to build evaluation and feedback into the course routinely so that students can use the feedback to progress successfully through the course.

Yes Patricia. That is one of those mistakes in teaching that you only make once! I now give them the assignments, due dates and any rubrics that will be used for grading the assignments.
Much easier for all of us!! The expectations are laid out and everyone is happy!!

It is very important so that they know that you mean business. I let them know the assignments up front in the beginning of the semester. The assignments will be from a given part of the exercises, such as te review exercises, case studies, etc. I also assign a grade to the assignments, and have a designated day on which these assignments will be collected, reviewed, graded and returned to the students. This helps students with their review of the theories, and allows them practical application of the concepts.

It it important to follow up with students because they equate your followup to the value of the material. If an instructor, doesn't followup, the student doesn't value the assignment and the student may not do the work.

Hi Donna,
It does make a difference. If they know you are going to follow up they are certainly more incline to do the assignment.
Patricia

Hi Laura,
Yes, and they also need to know that the work is very important for their success in the course.
Patricia

So that they know I am serious about the work getting done and done in a timely manner.
