Hi,

I followed all of this ideas, different version of the same exam, I actually try to schedule my exams with the other instructor so one of her students sit next to mine and still I walked around class.

Hi Terrell,
Wow, you put a lot of time into this method. You are a true educator! You do not do what's easiet for you; you do what's best for the students. Way to go!
Patricia

To monitor cheating students I continually pace and move about the classroom during quizzes and exams, but not in such away that it distracts the students. This technique helps keep the students honest. Also different versions of the quiz or exam will also minimize student cheating.

Space ia a major problem. Fitting 20 or so students in a classroom designed for 18 students presents too much opportunity for 'wandering eyes'.
To curtail this, I prefer to offer short answer exams instead of the multiple choice format provided by the software program my institution provides.
After the initial exam is given, as I am grading the test I usually write a follow-up question to a problem a student misses. Each student has a different question posed, and without the benefit of 'looking up the answer', I try to engage the student in: 1) Understanding WHY the question is incorrectly answered; and 2)Developing their problem-solving skills by considering other choices that may contain the correct answer; and 3) a student that misses the same question as the person sitting next to them rarely can provide the rationale for choosing that particular questions answer. Then, my 'radar' is up and that student deserves closer monitoring.

Our software testing program allows for shuffling of the test questions. This allows for a version "A" and "B".

I like to give assignments & exams where students must present the material--whether it is that kind of subject (e.g. history, english) or not (...math, science). This way they know they must learn the material enough to explain it.

Hi Rebecca,
What a great strategy to prevent cheating!
Patricia

use short answer questions

We give several formats of the same test so that the person sitting next to one another are not tempted to cheat. Also taking a seat in the back of room during the test helps

I also use this system. It seems to solve all the problems of cheating and allows me (as the teacher) to focus on other things.

Yes it will.I particularly do not worry about cheating because of that reason.

Hi Rochele,
At some point or another cheating will come back to haunt the cheater.
Patricia

It is important to build rapport with students early on.When you have a connection or a trusting teacher-student relationship with
students, they do not want to let you down by cheating.

Hi Maria,
The different versions should not be a secret. I like how you make your students aware of the variations.
Patricia

Hi LaurieAnn,
Absolutely! Watch your students during test time. Test time should not be the time for you to get caught up on grading, preparing, etc.
Patricia

Hi Chuck,
At least at the minimum, the student fails the course. Cheaters should be reprimanded.
Patricia

Hi Kim,
Absolutely... same test, but just in a different order. This strategy really works.
Patricia

Hi Winnifred,
Great ways to deter cheating. They work beautifully.
Patricia

I create different test versions and I monitor students during the test.

You can make different varieties of same test, mix questions and answer choices. Stand in back of class in one location and show students you are aware of activity in class.
