Patricia, I set up my classroom in a horse shoe design so I can keep an eye on them and they can all see me. I also stress the important of not cheating and make examples for the students on what can happen. I have caught cheaters in the pass even though it is rare in the program that I am teaching it happens. What I do is that I take the students paper I write them up then I send them to our education managers so they can make the judgment call if they can stay in my class. Usually the student has to go home for the day to think about it, but they still fail that course.
I find that by moving around the classroom while th test is being taken very helpful. Students realize that you are aware of what is going on.
One of the ways to reduce cheating in the class is to KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN! I often see instructors using testing time to grade assignments or work on their lesson plans. By keeping an eye on what's going on around them, cheating will tremedously be reduced beacause the students know they are being watched.
Where you stand. Alternate tests.
I have also used diferent versions of the same test and informed my student in advanced of these versions which keeps them from looking at their neighbor's test.
Hi Jamie,
It is important to be on your feet while students are testing. Just by standing deters a student from cheating.
Patricia
separate them watch for looking arounders
I agree with the other instructors responses I create at least two different versions of the test and I then scramble the answers it makes it very difficult to cheat... I also walk around the room while testing is in progress to monitor the activity of the class... I also remind them prior to taking the test that when they make a choice to cheat they actually cheat themselves because if they use someone elses' brain while in school they will not actually know the things they need to pass the Board exam and if they make it pass that they won't know how to impliment what they learned when they actually get out there.
The only way I have found is to not take your eyes off of them for a second if they do try and get caught they should be punished
Just before starting of a test I clearly announce the rules that need to be observed by the students during the test, and emphasise on the consequences of cheating. The students are made to sit apart.
I never sit down during the test I am always walking around, I spread the students out and I use different versions as well.
I use old fashioned "Management by Walking Around". This system also helps identify which questions students are struggling with.
I also use two versions of the test I pass out all the test, the let them know it is time to start. This way I can see all the students faces. If the students know i am watching them, there less likely to cheat.I also let my students know that if at any time a cell phone is out , it will be considered cheating and they will recieve a 0 on there test.
Make sure that you always stay in class when they are testing and if you do catch someone call it out, cause if not then they all think that they can get away with it.
I try to move students around when it comes to test taking , and i also call on themm to keep their eyes on their paper.
Hi Sandra,
I other rearrange the test or give a totally different test that tests on the same concepts.

One way I try to prevent it is to have the students bring a USB drive. This way they save their work on their own drive and not the student drive where everyone has access to it. Also, I walk around a lot and see what's going on. I also spread out the students when possible to allow enough room between them to avoid the possibility of seeing others' work. I also ask every time I see a student looking down and I cannot see his/her hands. this lets them know I will call them on it for using the phone for text messages. I also ask many questions so that I know whether or notthe students feel comforable with the material. If they don't answer, I ask what I can do to clarifyu their confusion. This allowa them to see that I answer questions and it helps to prevent that uneasy feeling taht they have to cheat to pass.
One way I try to accomplish this, involves the printing a test A and test B. They are the same questions but in different order. I also explain that although they can copy someone else work, when they are in the field that person will not be there to copy from. It will not help them to maintain a position. The employer will soon realize this and they may find themselves out of a job.
I use this form as well for my students. I would really like to get some other ideas on how to break up the tests other then test-A, test-B, test-C..etc....
I print out 3 versions of the test. A,B,AND C. The students sitting next to each other do not have the same test. We use ExamPro to create some of our tests. If the class is small, we have each student at a table for 2 all by themselves. This way we only put out 1 version of the test. This has worked well with us. We also place all cell phones on the table. This way they cannot text each other the answers. This has happened as well.
