Because interaction will make the student feel important. I twill develop a rapport that will help teachers spearhead issues with regard to student drop rates and anxiety levels within the classroom environment. Student want to be included and do not want to feel as if they are not a part of the class group. Interaction with all students will ensure that they have at least a little feeling of inclusion. Inclusion will foster an environment which promotes success.

Hi Deborah,
Students are important to us, and we need to make them feel in every way that they really do matter.
Patricia

Hi Michael,
Students need to and love knowing that we as instructors care about them. Make it a point to interact with each student daily, if it is nothing more than a simple "Hello." "How are you?".
Patricia

Students come from such different backgrounds. They have had different levels of success. At a career college, they may have entered directly from high school or may have been out of school for years. Interacting with students allows them to feel comfortable and to feel that they are important. I want each student to know that I care about them and want them to succeed, that they can learn and prepare for a career despite whatever impediments get in the way.

Interaction is important because everu student wants to feel apart of the class. Using a variety of methods will open up the quiet ones, have the angry students calm down, less cheating students.

Hi Cheryl,
I make it a point to greet/have small talk with each of my students daily. Students like it when they are recognized by the instructor. This is a great way to build a relationship.

Hi Jerry,
It is the instructor's responsibility to have meaningful discussions and to keep the class on topic. Some students will intentionally try to get the instructor off topic so that they do not have any work for that particular day.
Patricia

Interaction stimulates learning. I think of my classes as a conversation. Two way communication works best. I can steer the conversation in any direction I want and incorporate the material to be covered. Although this can lead to off-topic discussion, more often than not, I have meaningful lectures and go beyond the mateial I had originally planned to cover for that day.

Personal interaction with every student is a function of “show and tell.” Conversing with student “A” “shows” the other students, while “telling” student “A”, that you are interested in them.

Every student needs to know that he or she is important to me. It is vital to establish a rapport so students know their education is important to me too.

I think it is important to have interaction with all of my students. It halps to break down the teacher/student barrier and make them more comfortable when speaking with you. I like to interact with students outside of the classroom environment as well to show them you are a real person too. This will help them to participate more in class.

Hi Anecia,
I love interacting with my students. Students learn academia and professionalism from me, but I have learned a lot from my students over the years, such as the latest fashion, good recipes, tips for putting on makeup, etc.

Because it makes them feel like you know and respect them as an individual. It makes them feel good and therefore, motivated to participate.

So they feel like they belong. They came to school to be a part of something bigger than themself. Each interaction we make as instructors helps them to fulfill their goal.

It helps with classroom dynamics and knowing how to manage the entire class for the benefit of the whole. Knowing which students are silent versus always talking, or knowledgeable versus in need of help provides the instructor with a basis for interactive decisions on how to get the students to learn. Sometimes this will be by smaller groups, and at other times a specific individual question or instruction works. But the purpose for interacting is to know the student well enough so that you can use that students strength or weakness as a learning tool for the class by getting them involved somehow.

Interacting with the students is a way to get to know them better and their personalities and perhaps understand if their might be any barriers to their learning. It also lets the students know that you care and want their interaction.

Hi Carolyn,
Rapport building is important in education. Students will be a lot more open about things when they feel they have a relationship with the instructor.

In career education especially, retention of our students is imperative for the success of the student. We want our students to feel "stitched in" to the school and classroom environments. Someone who feels welcomed and appreciated is more likely to continue coming to class. They will then attain the skills they came to school for, and move onto their career goals.

By interacting with students, the student will feel more welcome and invited into the classroom environment, thus improving the likelihood that he or she will continue going to class and succeed in gaining the applicable knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for a successful career.

I find it important for several reasons.
Every student deserves the same attention. If they are enrolled in your class they are also paying for it, and should all be given the same opportunities.
I am more comfortable as a speaker if I know to whom I am speaking. I like to take a few minutes usually during attendance to chit chat, and ask the students how their weekend was, or how their day is going.
If the students find you approachable, they will ask more questions in class, and contribute to the conversation more, making it a better class.
The most obvious reason is that they feel important if you talk to them individually. They are more apt to come out of their shell and ask questions they need answers to.

By building a rapport with each student, I feel that I am building a bond with them that helps me understand their needs and helps them understand my methods and objectives. I spend a lot of time letting my students talk about themselves and their previous work/school experiences, as well as their goals for future education & careers. It seems to be a confidence builder for the students and helps them see that I am truly interested in helping them succeed.
