Our catalog is extremely important for us and our students. I use our catalog on a daily basis, to clarify several things that students have questions about.

Catalogs are the first and foremost reference that should be used by every student and every employee. For the student, it breaks down requirements, course descriptions, and the like. Students can get a feel for the school in more aspects than just class structure. For employees, the catalog is a major learning tool and needs to be referenced often. It helps the employee understand what is required out of the students as well as what the students rights are, such as disability. Even the employees that do not directly interact with the student population, the catalog is a useful tool to understand requirements involved for every student and the basic grounding of the school itself.

Catalogs are extremely valuable. They catalog (excuse the pun) the college's programs, rules and regulations at a moment in time. Should a dispute arise between the college and its customers, the catalog is a valuable piece of evidence which can sway heavily in favor of the college. It's a good idea to maintain a file of ALL catalogs with dates used. Should catalog supplements (things that change) be used in conjunction, they must be maintained.

Now that we have our catalog on our web site, we maintain an electronic copy and a hard copy.

The catalog contains important disclosures. It can also help employees find the correct information when helping a student and prevent misrepresentation. The catalog contains a lot of the rules for the college and students can refer to it when they have questions regarding those rules. For example, the attendance policy. This also protects the school because the student can't claim that they didn't know the policy.

Thanks Travis and to all who have commented on the importance of the school catalog. The catalog is a HUGE resource, a handbook if you will, that reflects on every part of a school's nature.

The catalog set a standard that the employee can speak and refer to and also the student will be able to refer to as well. It puts everyone on the same page.

The catalog is valuable to staff and student because it is a guidebook to the school. It allows a staff member to refer back to policies/procedures. As a student or prospective student, it allows them insight to how the school is ran and what is expected of them.

The catalog is valuable to the students AND school employees because the y contain the necessary information to make informed decisions. The catalog is the written policies of the school. They provide pertinent information on the school's policies and how they effect the student. They also provide guidelines on how the school behaves in a particular situation.

The catalog has the information the students need to be informed, educated, and to make critical decisions about the school. The student will know the policies and procedures of the school. Everything should be accurately documented in the catalog so the students can stay informed about the needed information about the school.

A catalog provides a framework for trust. Both the student and the institution's employees have a unbiased and accurate guide to aide them in making decisions, clarifying misconceptions and assist in certain categories of conflict resolution.

Catalogs are so valuable in the sense that the student can always refer to it to stay on point with what the rules, regulations are. Plus in the event that a student attempts to open a dispute in certain areas, they can be directed to the catalog and verify facts, which is why at my school, Admissions reap, and instructors are encouraged to become familiar with the contents of the called catalog.

Barbara,

You're right - the catalog is a composite, a factual summary, of everything a school offers. It is crucial, as the primary visual representation of factual information, that it is always accurate, complete and current.

Catalogs are valuable to both the student and the school as it is the document which guides and rules the institution. It contains all the programs and their requirements; it contains valuable information for the student on drops/withdrawals, grades, etc.; it provides the accreditation information; etc.

Catalogs are one of the most, if not the most, important publication at all colleges and universities.

Catalogs are a tool to be used by staff members to represent the school and the program of interest. Catalogs keep staff members informed on all pertinent information regarding employment rates, graduation rates, and graduation requirements for a certain program. The student can use the catalog as a reference guide to keep them on track when completing their program.

It includes factual information that a prospective student is to be made aware of in regards to cost, placement, etc.

Catalogs are valuable to both the students and employees as a resource to use to refer to during their employment and educational experience. A catalog outlines all policies and procedures regarding the students experience. It outlines items such as courses for each program, employee information, chain of command, accreditation information, and student services information.

catalogs contain the information that is needed for students such as calendars, classes that are required and other important information

The catalog serves as a way to protect both the student and school employee with laying the groundwork or rules for almost all scenarios that will happen during the student's time enrolled.

The catalog is most important because it goes over what is required of the student, the program requirements, course descriptions, school policies, and everything pertaining to the school. It is a great tool to have and to reference with any questions or concerns.

The catalog is a great way of communicating important information to the student, and is a helpful tool for the student to use to be an informed consumer. I am saddened by how many students treat it as just another piece of paper they receive during the enrollment process, but then later are concerned and dismayed when the policies within are applied to them. The catalog is part of the overall agreement about what being a student at your college means. It talks about who we are as a college, what we agree to do for you as a student, how much we will charge for that service, and how we plan to do it. It also outlines what you as a student agree to do in return to earn your credential, both financially but more importantly educationally as you move toward your career.
