How about implement some fun activities where learning can be easier;
ex; describing a cell by students being the cell and interact with each other.
You can always have a higher retention by preventing problems from happening. Encourage team play from helping out with homework to giving rides. Car pool since gas is 4$.
Have students consistently be busy whether is practicing skills, or cleaning lab, but keep the mind busy so they the student don't have time to think of external problems.

Yes, I agree with congratulating when necessary. I find I get more results, happy students when I point out their successes, just as much if not more, that their needed improvement. Some of these students just need some motivational words, and a person in their corner, a cheerleader.... to help them along and know there is someone watching and rootig for them.

1) I will make sure that all of my students know that I am available for tutoring right after class, 3 days a week.

2) I will keep my students engaged with lab based activities as often as possible.

3) I will make the goal of not only graduating from our program but also obtaining a job something that I consistently incorporate into the lectures, lab work, and activities, that my students are involved in.

1. Engage with students on a one-to-one basis.
2. Acknowledge any positive actions.
3. Discuss any problems the student is facing at that time.

1)Increase my attempts to connect with students who are not participating
2)Offer a step of engagement with each individual student in my class so that they know I am committed to their success
3)Create and encourage a group discussion or activity to help students feel more connected to their peers

Call if they miss one day, more one on one instruction and more tutor sessions.

Thank you, Paula. Good luck implementing these actions to improve student success.

Professor Kroh,

I would like to say that I really enjoyed your training and can't wait to share it with my colleagues.

1) I am going to call the students when they are absent. Normally the instructors do this but they tend to get busy and forget.
2) Put together a more current list of available resources that the students can use. There is a list in our student handbook, but I think I will put more resources in the list.
3) Continue to meet with all instructors weekly to address student issues as early as possible.

Be a positive roll model
Stay approachable with an open-door policy
Offer to tutor in areas that are vague

It is difficlut for me to address this question because I am not at my instition full time, only on a "as needed" basis. But the first thing I thought of that I could help with would be to offer to help with tutoring.

To improve retention at our institution the 3 steps I will make in the next 30 days are:
1. Call and Email students that are behind on posting attendance on day one of missing their due date.
2. Meet with students at least 2 times in their last term before they go off campus for their OJT and offer to meet one on one if needed.
3. Have my off campus email access reinstated to assure a faster communication with my students.

The three steps I will take to improve retention would be:
First: know my student's profile.
Second: Understand their needs and provide resources to meet their needs.
Third: Provide counseling and guidance as need.

*Work on creating a test taking seminar (students are not equipped)
*Continue to interact with students one on one as their academic advisor/mentor
*Work on bringing in more people from the students field of choice to be guest speakers and influence the students ("keep the dream alive")

To encourage the students to share their clinical experiences with their fellow classmates and with upcoming clinical students.
Provide more tutoring hours.
To always be the advocate for the students.

Try to maintain a positive class environment, engage students and more tutoring.

Mentoring -Matching beginner students with advanced students. Builds confidence and self esteem in both.

Calling students who are absent to check on them.

Have students exchange contact info and keep each other motivated. I usualyy know what is going on with all of my students from them as a class.

-Take more time out to talk to students to identify with them.
-Reflect on goals that they have set for themselves. Have them pull out their goals every so often to make sure they have reached the point they want to be.
-Listen to them, believe in them, and continue to be positive influences in their lives, hopefully share experiences that needed perseverance, show them that through it all I am here doing what I love because I never gave up.

1. Involving students in daily activities in the classroom; we cant function if your not here to do your part
2. Plan special guest speakers so they will not want to miss the subject discussed
3. plan field trips that involve their subject and hoe it pertains to their job

1. Meet individually with my students to evaluate where they stand and to establish a caring environment.

2. Organize a program-wide bbq for all cohorts so that they can all meet each other and discuss common goals/struggles

3. Plan out a big brother/sister program between entering students and students further along in the program for mentoring.
