1.) Be vigilant about being aware of at risk students and look for ways to help them.
2.) Remind them of various resources that are available to them at different times during the module.
3.) Encourage them to participate in extra curricular activities provided by the school.
We are an online college, so the steps we take must fit our structure.
1. Call up students who are falling behind in their work and set up meeting to determine what is causing them to fall behind
2. Call up students who are succeeding in their work to compliment them on their progress.
3. Send out a survey to students ans ask them what we can do to improve their experience at our school
Three specific steps I could take to improve retention are:
1) Build a stronger relationship between Student and Instructor; all of our instructors are taking a course to improve communication with students.
2) Improve our online orientation video to include the names of specific people to contact for a variety of issues.
3) Contact students who have not attended class by email. Include positive messages and demonstrate a caring attitude in the message.
(We are an online school so we do not see our students in a physical classroom.)
1. Research what resources our school has available for students and what resources there may be in our community.
2. Identify what some of the most common (negative) paradigms are and create a monthly lecture to discuss and bolster a more confident student body.
3. Review and hold a staff meeting about Instructor's sending at-risk students to peer mentors or student service advisors for intervention.
1. Find out more about each student on a personal level
2. Speak with the students and find out what they feel may be some barriers or challenges to their success at the very beginning on the program.
3. As an instructor, getting to know the student and stress to them the importance their career and success is to the school, myself and most importantly our goal is to be their rock so they feel secure and know we truly care.
1) Provide an environment of discovery,
enthusiasim (which is catching), and knowledge
for students.
2) Identify students with Academic Erosion or
Stagnation as soon as possible.
3) Continue one-on-one meetings to create a
dailogue with students, and provide tutoring
when necessary, and referral to wellnedd/
financial counselors, if applicable.
I would like to develop a holistic training module that defines and clarifies each campus member’s role in the retention process. It is important, not only for individuals to know how to fit into the process but also, to know to whom they should send students when the student asks for help.
I am a strong proponent of peer-to-peer mentoring. While a strong peer-mentoring program is an ongoing process, a specific step to take within the next 30 days would be to develop a strategic plan for the next six months that improves and increases the peer mentoring programs influence on campus.
A third step would be to set up an electronic suggestion box on campus. Students will be able to email their suggestions to the “box†anonymously. I experienced electronic suggestion boxes as an employee, and think it would work well on a campus for the students. I am not always a fan of anonymous suggestions but it may help reticent students to express themselves.
1) Be more positive
2) Direct students to make an appointment with Student Services and/or Career Services
3) Have students take a private survey on what issues and/or problems I personally can help them address for success.
Implement an instructor/student mentoring program.
Implement monthly perfect attendance awards.
Implement more student appreciation events.
One on One conversations, congratulate students on accomplishments, attend more student functions.
Develop and administer a brief survey to gauge the current state. Use the data to identify areas of opportunity and develop a near term action plan to address one of those opportunities.
1) Take a closer look at our student support services and see how we can improve and add new services.
2)more one on one meetings with the students
3)When meeting with a student, I will start implementing the survey method and the vertical probe to get clarity on the issue they are dealing with.
Communication regarding externship placements, discussion of career services post grad, meeting weekly to identify problems before they become too big of an issue
Use event marketing to create a culture friendly environment for displaying student art/music for past and present students. Use my classroom as means of educating students and preparation in their careers. Use down time, (hallway, break room, patio) as a means of staying in tough with students regarding their lives, education and careers.
1. Show students that we care by getting to know each student.
2. When our students first arrive at our school we have them write down why they want to be in our program and what they expect. I feel by reminding them as why they came to the school will help rejuvenate the reason the came to the school the first time.
3. Getting the instructors to buy in to be more positive to wards all the students
Have end of semester assessment to better understand how students are seeing the future.
Invite more speakers and grads to share experiences and the relevance of courses.
Pizza at the end of semester for my classes.
Implementing more opportunities for peer-to-peer mentoring and graduate to student interactions at events, starting with more campus activities.
Also, appreciation events would be good to keep motivation amongst the students.
Career workshops and continued communication with graduates will also make students interested in what comes with being an alumni.
Reach out to the students who have done well after struggling in previous terms.
Engage student workers in decisions made in the department (give them a voice).
Continue as a mentor and tutor to academically at risk students.
Listen, Look, and try to identify a potential "lost" student. I will work more closely with each instructor to identify concerns. Lastly, hold a staff meeting to discuss retention and the value of finding issues early
Continue with one on one chat sessions with individual students; being friendly without being a friend.
Asking other students when a classmate is absent or running late. Many students have been together quite some time coming through school. It shows to the others caring on my part.
Reiterating daily the course objectives that were laid out on day one, using a "roadmap" feel. Here's where we are and this is the stop along the way to our end of course objective.
