First Day Expectations
What are three expectations that you have of the students that you tell every class on the first day? What are three expectations that the students should have of you that you tell every class on the first day?
I think it is necessary to set forth expectations from the first day of class or else face unclear expectations which can cause unwanted confrontations. Establishing a supportive atmosphere encourages a learning enviornment.

The 3 I have is to make them understand the importance of the course, what they can make in the field doing the work, and what I expect of them to achieve the goals of the course.
As several other posts, the importance of being on time, being prepared for class, and understanding they are accountable for much of their learing. Such as asking questions not being content to just sit and listen.
They should expect that I do all I can to help be prepared for the work force, help them know what is needed to reach goals and in some cases point them in the right direction for their goals.
I expect them to be on time in uniform, I expect that they will complete tasks and assignments as assigned, and I expect them to learn and have fun.
I tell them that they can expect me to have the latest most up to date information available, that I will be with them during class and lab excercises and that I will create a comfortible learning environment for them.
Be on time, do your own work, be respectfull and ask questions.
I talk to the students about there Attendance, Cell phones, and Attitude.
The Expectations I tell the students are that I am here to see them succeed. Because of this expectation it seems I have students staying after class to help them thru some thing they are working thru.
I am here to give each class my full attention. I will do everything in my power to help each student succeed in this class. I will not give the answers away and that I will do what is needed to get the most from every student.
#1 be on time. #2 be prepared, notebook, pen/pencil whatever you will need #3 be prepared physicaly and mentaly, awake, ready for that days activities, test, lab etc.
They should expect me to be prepared. I should have prepared them for a lab activity or a test.
I will be willing to help at a certain time with anyone who is in need of extra help or tutoring.
I will know the class material.
Steve -
1) Be on time. It shows to the instructor and to the employer and you are dedicated to learning and that you would be a valuable asset to any employer.
2) Always be prepared. Bring everything to class. You maybe taking walks to lab to learn something. Talk, see, and feel by putting what you learn in class to practice is the best learning tools.
3) Never Say stupid or dumb. It means only an unanswered question. If you tell a kid long enough. That kid would use it as a crutch and give up on some of them goals that he or she could use later on in life or in their carear.
Follow standard procedures that will help them succeed in class and prepare them for the workplace after graduation. ie, be on time. look and act professionally, don't be distracted by things such as cell phones and napping.
Participate in all classroom and lab activities. includes performing labs as individuals, asking questions.
If there is anything that will prevent them from succeeding in my class, personal or in class, please let me know so I can assist in any way I can.
Joseph--
The interactive requirement is important. As you point out, it helps in learning as well as on-the-job.

On the first day I explain that there are many things in the work place and in the class room that your employer and I expect out of them. being on time everyday, coming to class ready to work and following directions.I explain that this is getting them ready for the work force. I also explain to them that I am here for them as a education tool. They need to ask questions and be interactive so we can get all the information across to them.
What I expect;
1. Be on time.
2. Fill out lab papers completely and turn them in.
3. Ask if you don’t understand.
It’s amazing how difficult these 3 things are for so many students.
What they should expect;
1. I will tell them the times that I am here to help them in addition to class time.
2. They will have to work hard if they want top grades, but the requirements are reachable.
3. If I don’t know the answer, I can help them find it.
Michael--
Your rules are great...and I especially like your set where you talk about failure not being an option!
Susan
I stress being in class, Participation, and being a professional. And in return I will work hard to excite their interest, Participate in their exposure to knowledge and help them follow through with the application of that knowledge.
The three expectations I have for students are:
1.You are responsible for being an active participant in your training. ASK QUESTIONS!!!
2.You are responsible for your lab projects/assignments(do not fall behind!).
This responsibility is yours alone.
3.Always come to class prepared for the day's events.
The three expectations that students have for me are:
1.Academic failure is not an option. Instructors are available both before and after class for individual help as necessary. Feel free to request an appointed time for additional help.
2.If I do not have an answer to their question I’ll try to get them an answer.
3.Being prepared for class.
Never miss class on the first day, this day sets the stage and expectations for the class.
pay attention and understand the requirements of the classroom and lab. I raise the bar to challenge my students.
be prepared for the class.
