My Space

Defining your space is critical. Others will try and "max" their space without regard to yours. A clasr understanding right off the bat will help develop mutual respect and a good relationship

There is never enough time!

The more I do the more it seams that I want to do. I have always had the problem of wanting to accomplish more than I have time to do.

Preperation = Success

Just like your students with the right amount of preperation you can be successful teaching anything.

Making Silent Student Open Up

I usually have small classes because I am at the end of the program so this is a luxury for me but i give them my personal and professional life story and ask that they do the same I find although painfull for some this helps them open up a great deal and I personaly know each and every student which helps me to be a more evective teacher.

unfocused students

I find that if you pin point a student who is having difficulty focusing, if you talk to him or her one on one and explain why that was importent to them and there career maybe throw a couple of real life examples out there they will start to be more attentive in class.

Review Syllabus

I find that if in the beginning of the first day of class you extensively review the syllabus show students page by page where to find the information they need to be successful in the class and what is expected of them I have a better success rate as a teacher.

Syllabus Key to instructor student expectations and CHOICES!

I find the course syllabus as the key to many of the discussions posted: late assignments turned in, student motivation, etc. I am a student and found one of the best syllabus seen allowed adult student choices in work with each one have a point value and out of all the choices you needed 40 points to complete the work. The student could choose to write papers, find 5 websites that supported the material discussed, post online discussion similar to what we are doing here. The key was the student had a choice and each choice empowered the adult learner by choosing his or her best way of learning. I have also had a syllabus that was 35 pages long and took me two days to determine the expectations and when and what was due to the Professor.

students behavior

I let my students know that I have expectation regarding their behavior in my class I ask them ack in the some professional manner that I try to hold myself to I explain that during my thirty years working in the field that I am teaching now I have had tto learn to behave in a more professional manner and I am willing to help them to work to achieve the same goal. they seam to respect and work to follow my lead.

Electronic TD Lists

I've always used a To Do list to manage my time. My downfall sometimes was taking the time to rewrite the list, and possibly reprioritize. Since I work at my computer most of the day, I decided to convert my TD List to a Word document. I keep that document open but minimized. When I complete a task it's easy to simply click on it, erase the completed task, and see what the next one is. This obviates the need to stop and rewrite the list. I also keep a modicum of a calendar in a second section of my TD list. Important events, which are usually associated with a task or some action on my part, are kept in chronological order. As these dates move closer it's easy to simply move them up into my TD list. Of course I keep a more detailed calendar in the normal fashion, but this method keeps my calendar synchronized with my TD list.

Create an enviorment the makes cheating less appealing.

Inform your students that when they cheat they are only cheat themselves. My students know I am available for them for additional tutoring. In fact I use my lunch or breaks to provide that service. The ultimate goal is to have students suceed.

Lead by example

The key component of gaining the respect of your students is by leadership. It the old cliche "Lead by example". Of course we discuss professionalism, but showing and setting it in play is the best way.

Make course requirement clear to students

Read through course requirement answer question at the end

If you make a mistake in class

Most students will catch it, so dont try to coverup

Cheating students

Monitor by walking around the class

New Instructors

You must find out your teaching strengths

Creating an istrutor image

I hopre instructors do not have to break the bank to look professional by dress !!!

The success of the student

I think it is important for the insturctor to show that each and every student is important. The student's success starts from day 1 up to the end. alas

Preparation

It is very important that the instructor is well prepared and he/she knows exactly what to be said in class. Alas

Ready to Quit Students

What are all the stretegies we need to work with Ready to quit students ?

Humanities and The Kinesthetic Learner

Some students come towards Humanities courses with some interest, experience, and success in these interests. Most kinesthetic students have had no success in these interests, and, therefore, they are predisposed to dislike and resent content. Solving their interest problems takes more than approaches that would help, for example, a culinary instructor to manage diverse interests of culinary students.
