GEN Y expecting knowledge to be given to them.

Having taught at a career school for several years now, I have noticed that Gen Y seems to be unique in that the majority of the them expect knowledge to be GIVEN to them in class and they seem to scoff at the notion that they should be reading a textbook, researching articles, or have to "learn" something outside of the classroom. They seem to expect the instructor to deliver it all during class; they seem to "check in" and "check out" of their learning when they walk into and out of the classroom. This is partly due to their attitudes and the fact that most of them have WAY TOO MUCH going on in their lives to really devote the proper amount of time to their education (kids, work, church, etc). Keep in mind this is a GENERAL observation and that there are always plenty of exceptions; I see them in every class.

disabilities

The course is very informative. Information is essential to have when a students has a form of disability and the instructor can manage the student and class content and material without changing the way each student learns.

Why do Gen Yers fear being out of touch?

In the module this question was asked, but I don't think the answer given was an answer at all. It only said that technology connects Yers to others. It said they want to have access and that not to have access is something they fear. BUT it never said WHY they fear that unless I missed something.

THIS COURSE

I am already enjoying this course. We have a diverse age group here at our trade school, form age 18 to 60. I know this course will be helpful.

Technology and Digital Immigrants

How much time should be spent on teaching Digital Immigrants Current or new technology?

Technology and Assignments

How many assignments should courses have tied to Technology and Assignments?

Technology in the Classroom

Is it appropriate for Instructors to allow students to use cell phones in the class for math?

Emotional disability

Our school has given a student accomodation due to the amount of stress the student is under in her personal life outside of her school life. She is taking medication for the stress and without the medication the student cannot perform. She brought in a Doctor's note and we have been asked to give the student more time to accomplish her clinical tasks and one-on-one time with an instructor. How prescriptive can the health care specialist be in regard to identifying the disorder so we can structure the accomodations?

Generation Y Learners

Should 90% of the teaching to Generation Y learners be technology based?

Do cell phones, keep the prof/teacher on top of the subject matter?

I have lectured my students on various curriculum subject issues. it's so funny because some one will respond & say...Wow Prof, you are correct. I let them know that I am correct. But I am always amazed that they can locate the information FAST. So I have found that prof/teachers can NOT make any errors...if we do the students will let us know & FAST too.

Social Media Use & School Policy

For most students, social media is a common interaction tool. In this lesson we learned that students can be engaged using social media networks like Facebook and Linkedin. Our school has a strict, no communication policy with regards to social media. Is anyone else finding this to be true with your institutions? Any success stories?

Working with ODD Students

I recently was leading a class with a student who has displayed signs of ODD both in and out of the class room. This student was involved in a verbal argument with an other student. I'll likely be working with this student again in the coming semester and I am very hesitant about accepting a teaching assignment with this student. Any thought about how to proceed without jeprodizing my adjunct position?

Verbal Interaction from Gen Y

Verbal communication is a difficulty for many Gen Y students. We often use role-play to help them script responses to interacting with a freelance business client. Anyone else find another method to help facilitate verbal communication?

research

I give a research project in every one of classes. They can use any technology tool available to them but must list their resources. That way if the baby boomers are afraid of new technology, they can use books and library.

my class

I don not ever try to use technology in my class unless I know how to use it first, lesson learned. I do use my I-pad in my classroom with certain apps that are suited for my medical discussions but to also help the older generations understand that, with some help, they can do it also.

understanding

Since my classroom contains all gernerqations I do try to meet their needs with not only technology, such as Ipad but also having to hand out a printed syllabus. I am a Gen X'er and my son a Gen "Y'.

Forced into technology

I am an early Gen X'er and my son is clearly Gen Y, I was forced iin learning the latest and newest technology available. I use my I-Pad in my medical classes as much as I can and to let the "old dogs" know that we can learn new tricks.

LinkedIn as a job hunt tool

We provide online sessions to train our students how to navigate LinkedIn and how to develop a profile. We also discuss ways to research companies, connect with decision makers and link with the students. How has this site been used in your classrooms if at all? Do you think it a good idea to connect/link with students while they are in school or only after they graduate?

Students with impairments

There are many Deaf students in my school. It is important to treat them as you would the other students. An impairment is not an excuse for rude behavior in the classroom.
