Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Continuous Improvement

I believe that a course should be reviewed constantly and that feedback should be solicited from the students on their opinions of the course content, style of delivery and appropriateness for the class to allow the student to apply their learnings in the real world. Michael McGivern

Providing meaningful feedback

I have found that students like to have detailed feedback and at times, it is necessary to return their papers using track changes and recommendations. I will add the rubric that identifies the areas in question as well. I also like to utilize a web link that is related to the respective material for that week. Michael McGivern

Getting the students to reply

I have found that it is imperative that instructors ask open ended questions linked to the weekly discussions, their experiences and readings. I like to leave the student with a question to "dig deeper" on the topic at hand. I also like to ask multiple students the same question to spur conversation and learning between them Michael McGivern

Linking course learning to reality

I have found the best way to connect students in the course room is to have the course developed so that it provides students the opportunity to share their personal experiences and link them to the course concepts. This makes it easier for the student to learn as well as making it easier for the instructor to see if the respective students can apply their learnings. Michael McGivern

Student Resources

I find that the more avenues of resources that you make available to students, the more excited they become. The simple variety of web resources that include library resources and video demos are endless and having those links available to students is essentially what they seem to need. This is my personal experience in the Visual Communications area.

Benefits of Evaluations

I look forward to my evaluations. I always do the very best I can - but reading the evaluations keeps my ego in check and I then can address where I can improve. Jim DeLapine

Feedback and Rubrics

My method of feedback always refers back on the rubric. I have an Instructor Comments area that is designed to support and clarify the assignment. In that area I always include the rubric. This is a way of avoiding a challenge by a student and also to make clear what needs to be accomplished.

Visual Learning

I have been teaching at ground campuses on a college level for 14 years in the Visual Communications area. I've been teaching online for the last 2 years and knowing that students in Visual Communications tend to learn more when they they can "see" what they need to do. I've needed to be somewhat creative in developing methods of delivering the information to them visually so I've created Animations for my Announcements and have also created a You Tube Channel that shows step by step videos on how to achieve what the assignments state that they need to do to supplement their learning. Students have been endlessly thankful for this additional learning tool. The extra effort on my part has made for some very happy students.

Teaching Techniques

I believe that an instructor needs to be flexible in his/her teaching techniques because not all students learn the same way or learn under the same approach. At the same time that instructors are flexible, they are teaching students to become flexible. This in fact will help them in their jobs and make them available to work successfully under different conditions.

Assessing content knowledge

Effective on-line instruction needs multiple assessment tools. Not every student will be able to take a quiz and show what he/she has learned. I strive to give students multiple and varied opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills.

Comfort in being a guide

I think I enjoy on-line teaching so much because I was always better at the "guide on the side" role. I taught writing for years and that subject just doesn't need as much lecture by an expert as it needs "hand-on" application and practice.

Trying something new

I have only used a synchronous method once, several years ago. My nontraditional students seem happy with the asynchronous courses but I wonder if adding an optional synchronous facet might be fun?

Screen capture

I have not used screen capture except to diagnose problems students are encountering. I am excited to learn about other uses!

Learning Styles

If you see that a student is not adjusting to an online course, how would you approach the student? What would you recommend to the student?

Evaluations

If students do not complete the evaluations consistently, how do you know if you are completing the course appropriately? Should there be an incentive for completing the evaluations?

Teaching Techniques

Which technique is most used, synchronous or asynchronous teaching? Which do you prefer and why?

Among the various types of information you will receive from learners, e-mail messages are likely to rank the highest. We recommend that you adopt a system for managing e-mail messages so that you reduce the amount of time you have to spend to respond to them.

Being Traditional

In a traditional classroom setting, learners benefit from immediate verbal feedback as well as non-verbal feedback in the form of body language such as smiles, nods, confused looks, frowns, etc. The absence of these types of feedback in an e-learning environment makes feedback particularly crucial in this setting.

MaxKnowledge Discussion

Writing text in MaxKnowledge platform works pretty much the way you would expect, but you also have the ability to include "smilies", "URL addresses" and some HTML tags in your text.

Something To Learn

A good way to help other people think about a subject is to ask them a question about it. Being asked a good question can really help us put information together, evaluate our existing ideas and create new ideas.
