About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Woei, Thanks for your comments, I always proof my emails for spelling and grammatical errors - it keeps things professional - the message is very much influenced by the presentation! Jay Hollowell

Dennis,

You raise excellent and thorough points regarding the ineffectiveness of some types of assessment questions. I too, having taught at the post-secondary level for years as well as developed curriculum and assessment tools, have an appreciation for valid and authentic assessment. I have always been, though, a proponent of utilizing the "none of the above" option from time to time because I think it may cause one to think of other possible solutions for an answer as opposed to one of the forced-choice responses. It also facilitates one to look at the other given options more closely. I must… >>>

At the APSCU convention in June I had the opportunity and honor to present a breakout session entitled "Flipped" Leadership. Based on the concept of the flipped classroom where instructors spend face time on more student interaction as opposed to lecture, "Flipped" Leadership likewise emphasizes the importance of spending face time with employees in more valuable areas such as collaboration, training and development rather than simply the traditional autocratic, supervisory methods. The foundation to Flipped leadership rests on techniques and strategies for engaging employees, facilitating buy-in, inclusion and motivation.

Since Faculty Coaches, Deans, Directors of Education and Program Directors, etc. may have supervisory responsibilities,… >>>

There is no doubt the emphasis we place in the career education sector of higher education on helping prepare adult learners for the workplace - particularly in their areas of interest and in occupations of high demand. There is a further and somewhat understated value though that we can surely emphasize, and be proud of, as we work with our fellow faculty. Not only does our venue succeed in workforce training, but, as we know, it serves as a conduit to a brighter future to many adult learners who may not have any other options. This hope for the future… >>>

We all know what "the bottom line" means in business, but there is an additional and crucial bottom line in our career college institutions. Our faculty is the number one link, the bottom line, to the daily success of our students. And successful students lead to successful outcomes which, in turn, lead to positive institutional effectiveness - an area of major focus in today's career college environment. One of our roles as administrators is to maximize the link between our colleges' institutional effectiveness and the power of what our instructors create in their individual learning environments. This ultimately affects the ingredients that result in a vibrant and lasting institution - relevant skills… >>>

Through the creation of an individual development plan, instructors can see that their college is interested in their professional growth, plus their teaching will be made more effective and efficient through improved instructional practice and enhanced classroom performance.  How does one effectivley co-create an individual development plan?  I'd like to share 3 tips to help you as you collaborate with your faculty to achieve their development goals.

1. Partner with Faculty - Successful marriage of performance management and development plans requires an active partnership and continuous communication between the instructors, coaches/mentors and the management. Instructors are the primary stakeholders… >>>

Thanks Deirdre, and as a set of metrics, both planning and control tools! Jay Hollowell
Thanks Laura, to your point, as the student/customer is at the center of your positive attitude, customer service is actually customer-first service. Jay Hollowell

Hi Robert, thanks for your response, here are a few of my favorite teacher mission statements:

As an educator, my mission is to facilitate an environment where a student’s learning is a balance between instruction and self-discovery.

My teaching mission is to ensure that my students have a place to learn, develop and grow further into the workplace professionals they wish to be.

My mission is to teach employable skills resulting in the opportunity for students to accomplish their career goals and climb the workplace ladder.

My mission as an educator is to be a teacher, a supporter, a coach,… >>>
