Marcie, Rebranding sounds like a great opportunity. We also believe in engaging students as well as faculty and staff. They are all sources of information, ideas, and new strategies. And they love to give their opinions. Word of mouth, in our opinion is THE best way to get qualified leads. And it doesn't cost anything except giving students an awesome experience. Ask your students and staff about the one or two messages they think will brand the school. Work one at a time. Measure. You'll do fine. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

John, Hi John, Offering non degree programs is a great idea, in our opinion. People seek training to get into the workplace quickly. But - degree programs take time. As you know, it's important to identify a ready market and then determine how to attract them with a goal of referral and word-of-mouth enrollments. It's the most economical marketing strategy and increases the opportunity to consistently reach qualified students who are likely to succeed. You have niche programs and thus saw that mass marketing of radio and tv was too broad and didn't have a good return. After you identify… >>>

Jonathan, Sounds like you have figured out how to build a successful brand and target just the people you want to reach. My guess it took a while. But now you have the formula. It is the same way with building relationships with the press - one person and one medium at a time. Sometimes it starts by sending dates of events to the calendar editors and interesting success stories to the Education Editor. Then they will find their way to you. thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

John, You've pointed out some interesting challenges we all face. I've found that we need to look for one solution at a time, share it, and tweak it. As to content, it is amazing that you never know what is going to be of interest and value to someone else. Solutions to "what is in it for me" is always a good way to start. As to social media, we find that the more we read about what others do, the better we are able to apply social media to us. Good news, thee is always something to learn! Thanks,… >>>

John, Sounds like you are going a great job and have a great start. What you might want to do is write up a "how to" for each successful event. Once you figure out how to make the event run, then you can give the task to others to repeat. The event itself can be a great way to get the word out about your school. YOu'll get the reputation that your school cares about the community. Good idea to talk to the local media, find out what they want, how they want the story, and learn who is truly… >>>

Kristy, Great. We think that the results of a great Career Services department speaks for itself. It tells prospective students that grads get jobs. It tells students to persist because there is a job at the end of their studies. It tells the community that your school is an important resource they should get to know. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Michelle, You point out something very important. A plan shouldn't be killed because it didn't work out right away. It could be a good plan that needs adjusting. You are quite right that weekly or even daily evaluation will help to head off problems in the beginning. People are too quick to stop something because often they are afraid. We learn more when things don't work. It forces us to be creative and consider other options. Maybe someone will be brave enough to re visit your community outreach plan. We also think one person needs to be out in the… >>>

jorge, We totally agree! We have seen how prospective students really want to speak with the career services department and talk about jobs rather than course work. In fact, many schools are now placing admissions and placement staff in the same space or near each other. Great placement rates motivate students to complete. And great placement rates impact grads getting jobs. Placement is what it is all about and many schools forget that. We have seen schools with part-time placement staff and then wonder why their stats are so low. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Michelle, We agree. In fact, we think that one person on staff should be assigned Community Outreach and be charged with meeting employers, organizations, and more. Everyone on staff should be asked what organizations they belong to and if they are willing to talk about the school at the next meeting or event. There are so many ways for your entire community to learn that your school is THE place for training and staffing. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Michelle, This is so well put. Thanks. Yes, a budget is the underpinning of a school and helps it run effectively. A budget helps make things happen and is a form of measurement and accountability. A budget gets staff thinking creatively. If they want to make something happen, what innovations are needed to, especially when there are budget constraints. It's great to get all staff involved and aware of the budget. thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
