HI Brickell, Great that you are building a database of high school grads. You can build a huge email and text list one name at a time. Reminder to add employers, community leaders, and other people who can benefit from knowing about your school. Sounds like you are doing so many things effectively. The fact that you have school people as members of local organizations means that they can each reach hundreds of other people easily. Posters and brochures are also a great way to get the word out. Do you have a special display for your brochures. Great that… >>>

Great strategy, Bonnie. By going into the classrooms you discover first hand the expectations and abilities of the students. Yes, they do all expect that a job comes with the tuition. They don't realize the preparation it takes and effort on their part. That's a good reason to meet with students early on. And sometimes the only way you can get to them is in their classrooms. Another reason why we think the placement activities and assignments need to be required. Everyone needs to know the job search process isn't a brief activity that happens after the last course. It… >>>

Very well put. And there is more to this scenario. Besides skills, the student lacks self confidence. It takes the entire length of the program to build this self confidence. That requires dozens of "placement oriented projects" for the student to learn employment and job search skills and have the exposure to the workplace by job shadowing, mock interviews, visits to the workplace, and lots more. Imagine if you included all this on your website. You would be alerting potential students that you offer lots of services to help ensure they get interviews and ideally are trained sufficiently to get… >>>

Hi Bonnie Wow. Really extremely well put and that mirrors our opinions as well. Placement truly does impact on every department of the school. And that is a reason that it is important to measure the results of each department in relation to the initatives of the placement department. That is truly a challenge and we haven't seen it done effectively yet. But this does help to determine what Placement will do in relation to each department and specifically how career services will be integrated into admissions, education, student services, etc. In fact, that would be a great policies and… >>>

You are so right. People want training because they want a job. That's why we think that the Placement Department should sit within the Admissions Department. Most applicants don't really care a lot about the course work. They just have to get through it. What they want to know is how are they going to gain the skills and confidence to search for the job and what is it going to be like in the workforce. That's why we believe that Placement and Career Services should be as prominent in the lives of students as the faculty. That's also why… >>>

We agree. All departments need to be together and focused on the each student's success. Thanks, Susan
Sounds like you are doing everything. You do a lot of ongoing coaching of students and seem to have a great community outreach program. How are your placement stats? And have you thought about an alumni association? That could be the next step for your school? Thanks, Susan
And we feel that everyone at the school should be thinking and talking about the world of work all the time. Susan
Agreed. Career services and thinking about a job has to start at admissions. In fact, we think prospective students should talk to the folks at placement. Not a lot of schools do that. Thanks, Susan
Classes are great in our opinion. Also assignments. But we have seen them be succssful when they are given throughout training and not just at the end. And when all assignments are required. Thanks, Susan
