I give my students a quiz each week on the previous week's lesson. That tells them if they
need to work on that particular lesson some more
before a mid-term exam. I also have an
individual conference after their mid-term exam
to help them see what they did or didn't do well.
Most of them appreciate knowing what they need to
improve upon before the final exam.
Hi Augustine:
I agree, the earlier we can intervene and offer ourselves and our suggestions for improvement, the better chance the students can recover and achieve a better grade.

Hi Laura:
I agree - even students who are under performing want to know their staus. If the student feels their teacher cares and is willing to offer assistance and suggestions, using this time can help bridge better relationships with students and their teachers.

Everyone wants to know how they are doing in a course. Keeping students informed at all times can keep the motivated students motivated and can generate some motivation for those students who are not. It also helps the instructor be able to identify trends in student learning and activity. If any problems are identified, they can be addressed sooner rather than later.
Barry,
This is important because it lets the students know where they are with regards to meeting the course requirements. My students have the opportunity to view their grades and monitor their progress. This way they are not “shocked” at the end of the program.
Hi Ken:
Yes, with the emphasis on "early feedback". Giving the student enough time to make corrections or adjustments in their study, or whatever other assistance we can give is best when there is time remaining for our advice to make a difference.

Hi Cynthia:
Good post! I think the "providing information on ways to improve" is very helpful and students will appreciate any and all advice given, even if they don't always voice it verbally.

Giving students feedback on their status in the course is part of the instructor responsibility to the student. As a student I need quality feedback and want it! Not just "Great job" on top of the work but both good and bad so I can improve. This feedback and status also inspires a student need to change if they want to be more successful in the course. Early truthful feedback and status of progress in the course is essential for an instructor at every level of education and training.
Students should always know how they are doing. The sooner you can get test scores to them, the better- it relieves worry, and also can motive a student to do better, as long as you provide information on how they can improve.
Hi Dr. A:
Yes, a right to know and a personal resonsibility to respond to that information. Even though there are automated ways students can view their grades, I think finding a way to connect personally with students is important.

Students have a right to know how they are doing throughout the course. Formative evaluation offers them the opportunity to keep tabs on their own progress.
Hi Lisa:
I believe we can motivate and encourage students as we are keeping students informed. The trick is to maximise the moment we have with the student. They'll appreciate the time and effort even if they don't verbalize such sentiments.

Hi David:
True, if you intervene early enough, some students may be able to bring their grades up. An opportunity to encouarge, share ideas, and assist with assisgnments can also occur.

Hi Denise:
Yes, keeping your students informed is helpful, and they appreciate the attention from their caring instructor.

Students want to know how well they are doing and they want to know if they can have an opportunity to do better in a course. Giving back papers and assignments and exams in a timely fashion is the best so that they can always keep abreast ot their status in the course. It lets them know, too, that you, the instructor, care about how well they perform in the course and that you want them to have the time to be able to do extra credit if necessary so that they might be able to pull up a low grade on an assignment.
So that they want get so far behind before they are aware of it. Shows them thier weak areas so that they can focus on them.
keeping a student informed of their progress is an important part of the teachers practices. Keeping our students informed builds a relationship between the student and teacher; and creates vestment on the part of the student and builds hopefully motivation for the learner
Hi Dana:
I think we can use this time to also be available to assist the the students with their questions, offer suggestions for improvemnents, and be an encouragement to them.

Hi Grace:
Based on what you say you're doing, I'm surprised you're getting 50% in this category. You suggest perception is at thye root. Here's a suggestion.
Next time you have new students, ask them on the very first day "how many would feel it would be fair if I graded and gave your quiz and test results back the same day?". I'm going to guess you'd get nearly 100% affirmative response. If some disagreed, ask them what more you could do. If it seems reasonable, you could consider it. But even if not, you have now set the expectation and as long as you stick to it you should see this category improve. Good luck!

this is to inform students on their prgress in the class.
