Hi Jeaneen:
Interacting with the students can certainly help make students more comfortable with the idea of approaching the instructor for more help.

Hi Shannon:
To support this very idea, a lot of institutions are moving towards electronic databases systems that allow the student to access their grade any time they want.

Hi Ulises:
Exactly - one way to overcome this potential problem is to give the students access to their grades in electronic format. Many institutions have moved to this very concept to give more power to the student and their own outcomes.

Hi Reginald:
The nice thing about getting to a student early is it may help save thme from failing the class entirely.

Keeping students informed of their status allows them to see if and where improvements need to be made, and allows the student to see where they may need help.
I always make sure my students know that they can come check grades anytime they want. I alos talk to students that are not doing so well so that they can have time to improve.
If the student knows the areas he is doing poorly he can review the material before the next test.
Students also need to know when they are doing well, which can reduce stress.
It is a way of avoiding surprises at grade time. Students deserve to know how they are doing and where they stand academically so they can focus where they need to focus.
Students want to know how they are doing in the course. It is unfair for them to get to the end of the course and find out that they have not passed the class. By keeping students informed of their status of the course throughout, there are no surprises, and students who are struggling my find that they are doing better than they though. Also, those who do not feel that they are struggling may be surprised if to find they are not doing as well as they think they are. This can also be a major source of frustration at the end of the term.
I believe keeping students informed about their status and making suggestions and assisting the weaker students with before and/or after class sessions to improve their class standing is very helpful.
Being informed of where you stand in the class allows that student to make the necessary adjustments that maybe needed to bring grades up, increase their study time or to continue doing what has been working for them. Armed with the facts of your class standing, the student have control of what needs to be done to meet class requirements and maintain their standing.
I have failed to give students updated status of their grades and at the end of the course they asked for help. I now keep everyone apprised of their grades and there are no surprises at the end of the term.
I think it is very important on keeping the students informed of their grades as they go along, to keep them motivated and to stay focused. If they are not doing so good then maybe seeing the low grades will motivate them enough to "dig in their heels" and do better.
Hi Joseph:
Most students want to know how they're doing. As an aside, I think whatever method a teacher uses to share course status, there should be some time avilable to personalize it - to encourage, support, inspire, and to convey that you care about their success.
I've found when students feel the teacher is rooting for their students success, that will foster better performance by the student.

It keeps them engaged. For those students who really want to do well, this will make them work a little harder the next quiz, test, etc.
I agree, it is important to keep students informed of their progress. One way I do this is to review grades from quizzes, exams and/or tests asap after taking them. This way the material is still fresh in the students' minds and they are able to review it as needed.
Hi James:
Some schools that use electronic grading systems provide a means for the student to know where they stand virtually instantaneously. That's good on one level.
I also think it's important to have some 1-on-1 time with each student to inform them of their staus, but also encourage, offer support, and convey we're there to help them succeed, not fail.
Regards, Barry
I think that most importantly, keeping students informed of their grades keeps their level of anxiety down, as long as they are doing well. It also lets the student and the instructor know where
they need to improve.
Hi Kelly:
Rapid turnaround and student feedback provides instant reinforcement of good work and immediate opportunity to correct less than accurate responses. I think students like to know where they stand. This can also give the teacher personal time by explaining where the student needs correction.

It is important to keep the students up to date on their grades so they know how they are doing. I like to grade their exams at their break and give them their scores at the second half of class. We can go over the test and the students find out right away if they didn't understand something and I can clear up any questions right at that moment.
They can get back on track and know the right answers and keep their learning on track.
In my class i keep the students informed of their grades and attendence because it helps them know where they're weaknesses are located. I have found that the students work harder if they feel you truely care about their education.
