Hi Marsa:
Nudging is good. Frequent nudging is better.

I think informing students about their performance is good and we have to understand it takes a bit of time for students to make corrections or adjustments in their thinking, or apply the suggestions for improvement we've made. So intial discussion followed by periodic updating and reinforcment is best.

Also, sharing with caring, kindness, and honesty and sincerity will demonstrate professionalism and convey the teacher care about the student's successfulness.

Hi Carol:
It's probably true that everyone wants to do their best. When that's not the case, we have a duty to inform the student and give them the corrective information we think they need to make improvemnt.

The earlier we can intervene is important since many students take some time to make corrections and apply the suggestions given.

Honesty, kindness, caring words along with encouragement and support are keys to students accepting our advice, along with perhaps trust and respect.

Hi Maria:
Status or class standing is critical information to share. The more frequent this occurs the better in my opinion. Students need time to correct, and also to begin to make improvements.

One simple technique is to always offer encouragement, support, and kindness when convey grade information to show there's nothing critical being convey, only assistance and suggestions for improvement.

Hi Heather:
Good point. Also, many times students will need to have a full comprehension of one or more concepts before they move on to new material.

I think frequent sharing of grades, points, and status, accompanied with kind and caring words of support and encouragement can create an improved learning environment, laced with trust and respect from both teacher and student.

Regards, Barry

Hi Barbara:
Sounds like you've got a good "rhythm" of frequent reporting times for your students. There needs to be time for students to make corrections and bring up their grade (if their lower performers), so more frequent updates help.

Whatever the information is, students will appreciate the time and effort a teacher will give to assisting with suggestions, advice, and ideas for correction. If acconmpanied with encouragement, support, and conveyed with a kind and caring approach, the students will be more open to the teachers advice too.

Hi Denise:
Programming this status update into the course is good. Even so, I think more frequent communication regarding performance and improvement is helpful.

Also, sharing that information in a kind and courteous way, offering support and encouragement, and giving advide and suggestions will comfort student and perhaps they'll realize "this teacher cares about my learning and success".

Regards, Barry

Hi Arturo:
Sure, for improvement to occur, the student first needs to be informed, then suggestions and advice can be given. And sometimes it takes a little bit of time for coorection to occur. So, the eariler and more frequent the teacher can meet with the student, the better chances the student will have to make needed improvements.

Regards, Barry

Its very important, it lets the students know where they stand in a particular course and make any nessassary changes in order to pass the course.

Keeping the students informed will let them see their success and hopefully give them a nudge if they are not being so successful.

Hi Tiffany:
I think frequent sharing of grades, points, and status in the class makes for beter understanding by the student and helps to reinforce the student-teacher relationship.

And besides grade information, we can also share suggestions and advice, and if we are kind, coureous, and sincere with students, they'll appreciate the care shown which can contribute to the student feeling like the teacher cares.

Regards, Barry

Hi Seth:
Good points. If we can be frequent and helpful in sharing class performance, students will recognize this as a teacher who cares.

Kindness, courtesy, and honesty are always great ways to earn the trust and respect of student. And if they respect the teacher, they're bound to be more productive in the classroom.

Regards, Barry

By keeping accurate student status it provides the student a better chance to improve and achieve higher grades at the end of the course.
They will be able to know where they stand in the course and maybe change their study habits or work status to improve and better the final scores.

As part of their learning, students must know where they stand periodically so if they need tutoring this can be offered.

It helps to build up there confidence. This allows them to keep going and to accomplish ther goals.

Hi Marianne:
I think you're right about frequent sharing of garde status. There needs to be time to make corrections, and sometimes the advice we give is great, but it takes a while for the student to put it to full use.

One key is to be kind and show care when speaking about grades. Too much emphasis on the negative can turn students off. But if the sense "boy, this teacher really cares about my success", theyll be apt to listen and follow the suggestions given.

Regards, Barry

Hi Noralee:
Frequent and prioritizing student feedback is nearly as important as the the delivery of the content itself. Students want to know how they're doing. Even if big improvements are needed, they'll be glad the teacher took time to share.

Regards, Barry

Hi Ali:
Frequent status updates and current information assist students in guiding them the direction that will be most successful. Like a boat adrift, if we can steer the student in the general direction, with constant reinforcement and "on-course correction", they';ll likely do much better.

I always like to add that the way information is conveyed is important too. Kindness, caring words of comfort, along with encouragement and support, advice and suggestions for improvement will be received as concern by the teacher for the student's success. That's a good feeling to have - like the teacher is the advocate, not the problem.

Regards, Barry

Noralee: I knew what you meant. Thanks for the clarification. - Barry

Hi Noralee:
Most definitely, student staus discussions have to be private and confidential (even though I think students immedialty go out and share what the teacher told them - sometimes with selective hearing).

Performance can be improved when we share advice and suggestions for improvement. I personally think this information comes across better when it it's accompanied by encouragement, support, and conveyed in a kind and caring manner.

Regards, Barry

Keeping students informed of their stauts should help to minimize some of the stress they have simply by being a student in the first place. If they have to wait weeks, etc for grades they may be so pre-occupied with how they did on the previous section, they can't give their full attention to the new information you are teaching.
