Students, just like employees, need feedback in order to know success. By informing students of their progress it reinforces those who are doing well while helping those who are struggling to better focus their energies.

Hi Stacey:
The more frequent we can keep our students informed, the more likely they will be able to respond and improve on weaker areas. Being able to offer encouragement and support, and of course, assistance is also quite helpful and this is perfect time to discuss and relate.

Hi Theresa:
Electronic grading does have it advantages and disavantages. Entering a students performance allows instantaneous point or grade sharing. What is important (and most electronic grading systems allow for this) is the interpersonal comments, connections, and encouragement opportunities the teacher has access to. To me, without adding these comments of suuport and advice, the grades, although current are very sterile, and indirectly a reflection of me. I also use the email system to convey brief and regular comments.

Hi John:
Growth and progress definitely are improved with staus updates. Offering suggestions for improvement, tips, asssistance, encoyuragement and support show we care.

Hi Kathleen:
All good reasons. It also gives the teacher an opportunity to offer encouragement, support, assistance, and show that they care about the students success.

It is important to keep the student informed about their status in the class for several reasons. They will know if they are meeting the necessary goals, how they may need to review areas to improve, and if they are in danger of failing.

Hi Kiarra:
True, assessment of student learning and teacher performance can be analyzed based on discussing student status. When this is done frequently, a process is established that is more linked to success than possibility.

It is important to gage the students learning process. It will help them and the instructor know where they stand and where they need improvement. It also can be a big motivator and away to gain self-esteem because there is nothing like the feeling of getting a good grade to show your level of understanding of the content. However if the grade is low it should signal the student to study and improve and rejoice even more so.

So students have the chance to step it up if they need to and discuss any discrepancies they may have. Students like to know you are keeping strict tabs on their grades. I always advise my students when they have failed (

Hi Robin:
We all do better when we have information. Giving status reports helps show where good work has been achieved, where more effort or focus is needed, and also offers the opportunity to commend, encourage, and offer assistance for improvement. Doing this frequently is the best. This shows the student we care about their success.

Hi Dennis:
I think we all do better when we have information. It helps makes decisions, and provides a better pathway for planning future events.

Although I always kept a running total of my points in classes versus the available number of points, not all students do. It's important to let them know that they are on-track in the class or falling off the tracks. In our school, we have notification sheets for students performing poorly and need to inform them in writing. An additional action that I take is to put the information into an Access database and print out personal score reports. Students can let me know if there are any errors in my gradebook; I, in turn, share with them how well they are doing. If there are discrepancies, we can straighten them out before the end of the term.

Students need to know when they are successful as well as not performing up to requirements. We are not only teachers, but cheerleaders at times too.

Our college uses an online grading system, so students can log-in and know exactly where they stand at any point in the course (granted that the instructor is actually keeping up with it). I post grades every week for their assignments so they always have an approximate of where they stand. The problem with the online system is that it treats all assignments in a single category as having the same weight (i.e., Assignments are worth 40% of the class, and all assignments are worth the same). But in reality, some assignments are worth more than others in the same category, so the online is close to the actual grade but not exact. Anyways, this has been very helpful to students who slacked in the first half of the semester understand that they only have X amount points left, so it's imperative that quality work be turned in during the second half or they may receive a failing grade. It also encourages students to find extra credit opportunities or perhaps have a change in attitude on class participation.

Grading measures student progress. If we don't allow students access to their progression, they cannot grow during the course.

Hi Christopher:
Good points. frequent sharing of grading information provides sttaus, areas needing improvement, suggestions on achieving improved performance, but most impotant, we can also offer kind and caring words of encouragement.

It is very important because it allows students to know exactly where they stand in the class. It also allows me as the instructor to determine how well the students are grasping the course material. So it benefits both the students and the professor.

It gives them the initiative and motivation to proceed forward

Hi Joseph:
Sure, like a trial run. If the goal is to measure learning, I don't see why we can't be creative and do a pretest to see where students are strong, and where additional work may still be needed.

Hi Aylee:
We teach classes and hope students understand. But, we know, there will be various degrees of performance. So, another form of teaching is meeting one-on-one with students to instruct, give help and assistance, and also encouragement, support, advice, and the ability to listen to the students's needs.

Hi David:
Too bad about the Excel grade sheet.

But more important is the relationship and connection a teacher can make by visiting with their students, encouraging, caring, helping, sharing - all tenets of a teacher that is interested in the successfulness of their students.
