Brezita,
Successfulnes by its definition is achievement at, above, or below a standard. Therfore, frequent sharing where a student is in comparison to that standard is essential.
Barry Westling
It is important because it is critical for the students success in the course and it gives the student a chance to improve, where needed.
James,
Yes, and when students see their teacher cares about their successfulness, they'rte likely going to try harder, regardless of the outcome.

Scott,
Good. For me, the personal discussion of class performance, presented in a professional but sincere and caring manner yields the best results.

Carole,
Good ideas here. My classes have due dates for a term paper 18 weeks in advance, with all the required formatting and expectations detailed in the syllabus. I ask for progress along the way to assure a student is not procrastination. I agree, more time is better.

Students need to know how they are doing in a coure constantly. This will give the student a chance to improve, seek help and or mentoring before a time crunch occurs. Students learn differntly so techniques can be altered to allow a demonstration of students success.
It is absolutely vital to keep your students informed. It allows them to track the progress that they have made as well as shows areas needed for improvement. I schedule one on one meetings every 4 weeks for our 12 week program
Students do need to see what progress is needed. An abbreviated version of the syllabus with the dates assignments are due can be helpful. I give my students as much time as possible to start the assignment i.e. 2 weeks before the paper is due. I encourage them to consider their personal schedules and plan ahead.
Tracey,
It'ss difficult for students to be absent and gain the full benefit of their instruction. Absolutely, attendance as well as academic performance is a critical portion of keeping students adequately informed. Having this discussion with sincerity and concern for the strudents successfulness will usually be received well, and a complete turnaround in performance is possible if the discussion is done early on and frequently throughout the session.

So they may identify their stregnths and weaknesses and develop a plan.
I keep my students informed of grades so they know where they stand. It also gives thema n idea of how attendance can affect the grade too
Candace,
Too, when we share info early on time for correction can occur. And any discussion we have helps build relationships with students.
Barry Westling
It is important to keep students informed so they will not be surprised at the end of the couse. They will also have a chance to work a little harder if they need to in order to bring up the grade average
Shannon,
What's cool is we establish and/or reinforce our relationships with students when we take valuable time for this important activity. Like you said, this helps build trust and respect, both ways!
Barry Westling
Keeping students informed of their status in the course at all times reflects trust and respect in the instructor-student relationship. If I am keeping my students updated on their status, they seem to show more respect and excel as active participants in class activities/discussions. I grade exams and return the exams to the students at the next class meeting. We review the exams together and I answer any and all questions. The students at the school that teach can access their grades through the school system. The students are always pleased when their grades are entered in a timely fashion. This also helps them to know where they stand with their assignments and/or grades.
Joseph,
The one thing that's common here is you are providing quality one on one time with the student. I feel strongly that when teachers give individual time, the students are just going to do better.

Some students can sail through a phase with seemingly little to no effort. Some students struggle throughout. Despite that, everyone likes to know what their progress is.
Relating to the struggling student, they like to know so they can figure what the minimum is to do to get by. They are willing to accept whatever the lowest grade is so they can 'move on'.
This provides a couple of things for the instructor, specifically relating to the struggling or lazy student. One, it gives an ongoing assessment to the instructor of what kind of student the individual is. Two, it provides an opportunity for the instructor to possibly assist in changing the mind set of the struggling or lazy student with developing skills to make them a better student and person.

Aaron,
Yeah, I like that! Ownership and responsibility. If we provide current information then we've give the student(s) the tools to work on any improvement needed.
Barry Westling
If a student is aware of their standing/performance they have the abilityt o take ownership and responsibility of their actions in and out of the classroom.
Paula,
Sincerity will always rule over personaility. So, being genuine and authentic is usually recived weel by students, and can pursuade them to perform a bit better in class.
