Beverly,
Your situation is unfortunate although I don't think it is uncommon. It is for this reason instructors must take time to plan, organize and ready their materials and lesson plans prior to class.

Barry Westling

Insturctor image palys the role. If the students see you not prepared for class and very disorganized they will have a very bad impression of you. You can lose their respect in that you are not taking the time to provide them a quality learning environment for tehm. It als makes it very difficult for you to be in control of of everything that happens in class. You would have and setting a bad exmple to the students.

If one is well organized and prepared there lecture it will help them not being so nervous when presenting your lecture, especially for first time instructors. Students will also pickup if an instructor is not well prepared or has not prepared at all for class. It will show them that you do not care of their learning that you there for the pay. There is another factor that by being prepare you are setting up an example that no matter how much you know the material you have to prepare the material. That I need to prepare notes and that they to need to do they part and take notes when they study and during lecture.

I believe that organization and preparedness add credibility to the class, classroom and the instructor. I am a firm believer in organization and unfortunately our campus does not allow for time to prepare for our classes, which is very frustrating for me as an instructor. I want to do the best I can for my students. I want them to leave my classroom with a feeling of accomplishment.

Larry,
I think one of the hardest things to endure is having to sit through a lecture or some part of a lesson when the instructor appears unprepared or seems like they have no idea what they're talking about.

Barry Westling

Robert,
One thing is for sure, we cannot be effective instructors without being prepared and ready for every class session.

Barry Westling

so the class lessen will be taught correctly

so that the students will get all the knowlege that you have

Kari,
True, students can acquire the traits their instructors convey, both good and bad. Being ready with an appropriate daily lesson, prepared to answer student questions and assist with learning the material, and providing a welcoming atomsphere for learning will contribute to students approach to their studies and forward into their work setting.

Barry Westling

I agree. You are presenting yourself as someone to emulate. If you present yourself as "a mess" you will develop messy students.

Karla,
Winging it just doesn't make it these days. Adult learners want and expect fully competent, mature instructors who can assist them get job ready. Anything less will probably be received as not so good.

Barry Westling

If the instructor is not prepared and organized it can effect the students in many ways. The students may get the idea that the teacher is not effective. The classroom manamgement will also be poor if the teacher is not keeping the students productive due to unpreparedness.

Funmilola,
Right. An organized plan precedes delivery and presentation to the class. Students grow to expect organization and order in the classroom.

Barry Westling

John ,
I agree. I think part of being prepared does allow for irregularities in planned activies to occur and I am able to take them in stride. We talk about in the course as back-up plans, which is big part of being prepared.

Barry Westling

Preparation sets the tone for the day. Without preparation, the instructor jumps from topic to topic. An unprepared instructor start teaching and finally remembers to introduce the topic at the end of lecture. Your students start learning the information at the end of class, instead of at the beginning. Very confusing for students.

Being organized & prepared brings a sense of confidence to the classroom. It allows me to focus on the material and not worry about things that could go wrong.

John M.

Carl,
An organized plan and mind precedes an organized class. From there, all sorts of creative activities and instruction can occur.

Barry Westling

The goal of any classroom activity is to communicate knowledge to students, motivate them to learn and excel. A well organized session offers no impediment to learning, encourages students to learn and excel. Well organized sessions encourage students and maximizes information transfer and further research.

KAI,
For sure, one thing we should be doing is serving as good role models. It's up to the students to decide if they want to follow our lead.

Barry Westling

I think students look to us as role models and so by being as organized as possible the students get an idea of how to emulate good behavior.
