Sheena,
I believe students offer their respect and trust based on their individual and personal reasons. Nonetheless, my job is to come to class filled with enthusiasm, interest, and creative activities that engage students. If respect accompanies that, all the better.

Veneece,
Right. Students look to their instructors to be the plumbline and mentor for their successfulness in the class. When prepared, that reaffirms their confidence and provides assurrance that they are getting the best instruction. Students need a daily dose of preparation by the instructor or a potential breakdown in student achievement could be the result.

I believe it is important for an instructor to be organized and prepared for each class so that the students respect him/her. It will also help the instructor maintain control of the class and give the students a sense of direction. It will also help to keep the class on task and allow the students to feel engaged.

It is important to be organized and prepared to set a model for the students and to prepare them to what are the course expectations. Also being organized will give the students the feeling that the instructor is a reliable and trusted source for teaching them .

Shayan,
When organized, instructors can more effectively put their focus on the more important aspects of their job while routine administrative tasks will be taken care in a more appropriate fashion.

Chelsea,
Yes. It's our job, and students will give respect and lose trust in instructors who consistently fail to ready themselves properly.

Being a teacher is a frantic job, creating lesson plans, grading, and working with students. I personally know that being organized will help me tremendously in getting all my work completed on time, as well as it becoming much easier by eliminating wasted time, for example, looking for handouts, etc. being organized allows me to focus more time on student learning and their learning outcomes. although, organization takes a little extra time at the beginning, but it more than pays for itself in time saved as you progress through the term.

Being organized for instruction demonstrates to students that the instructor is qualified, sincere and motivated to teach topic at hand.

Cecilia,
These tenets are sure-fire methods to promote trust and confidence in an instructors abilities in the eyes of their students.

I agree that instructor behavior and preparation greatly influences student engagement and participation in class. Also, when you are organized, prepared and serious about instruction, you show respect to the students and garner respect from them. Finally, if you throw in some enthusiasm, you have the recipe for a successful class!

Nicole,
I think students look to us for direction, and even subtle changes from the routine are noticed by students. If we want and expect full particiation and focus by students, we need to do our part each day, every day.

I like to think of it as leading by example. When I am prepared for my class, my students also come prepared for my class. If I am running late, or am not prepared the way I normally would be, it sets a negative tone for the whole class.

Ali,
True. Organization helps keep the different and varied tasks required by instructors managed and prioritized.

Teaching can be an stressful occupation. The teacher is "on show" when is standing in front of the class. The amount of paperwork, grading and form-filling required can be daunting, particularly to a new teacher. The key to success is to be really organized and well-prepared.

Elizabeth,
Your course objectives is a good place to start. then I would tink about activities that students can can do that support meeting them. Discussion (group, pair-share), active use of the flip chart and white board (involving students), demonstrations (facilitated by students), and participative review of course topics are among methods instructors may organize their their classes to involve students.

Initially I found difficulty in organizing and preparation. IT issues, time restraints, supply issues and not understanding the manual test developement in an environment that isnot technologically advanced. I still face a lot of frustration but seem to manage the (reaction) better which I see has an effect on the students perception of me. What are some alternatives to field trips, colored paper etc, as these are not options (fiscally) available to me.

Doris,
We are the ones students look to for guiding them successfully through their courses. Therefore, preparation is key to being that important asset to accomplish both student and goals for meeting student learning objectives.

It is important for a instructor to come to class prepared because the students look at the instructor as a guide.

Ndidi,
Yes, students are often anxious about their studies and coursework. I think they often look to their instructor for reassurance and security, and one manifestation of that is the degree of preparation and organization the instructor has done to ready themselves for a given class.
